When you're prepared as a volunteer, how do you know when it's the right time to leave your couch watching the game, and head to a fire?

Our guys here are all paid, have pagers, and some have radios..

Difference might be that we have "frequent" callback? ....Like daily?

    Exclamation

I have a pager, cell phone and portable radio ALL issued by the department. I am of the belief that they want to contact me or invite me to some event they may just have, I have the means for them to do that. If I wasn't a staff member, I would not have any thing to contact, advise or alert me of some event. In others words, I have a cell phone so my wife can contact me, if so needed by her at home or something very important occurs.

Other wise, I am not connected by any electronic devices, what so ever.

Well, most of you have probably figured out, I am kind of a radio geek. I can tune to any frequency and PL form 120-170 Mhz and 430-520 Mhz on the fly, and I have pre-programmed all the local stuff. I can hit a button and enable and interop cross-link from any 120-170 channel to any 420-520 channel. Most of mine can be put in a silent selective call mode so they stay quiet until the tones go off. Nice if I don't want to listen to the mobile radio but the pager won't pick it up because I am too far away. Hmm, oh I can send the tones and selective calls from my truck as well. I don't anticipate ever needing to but it is cool to have the ability

Cluttering up my truck and house is an equal numnber of portable radios. I only use one for work and one for the FD, the rest are just taking up space.

Dept issued pager of course but I am starting to rely on a small portable radio with two-tone decode isntead.

Oh yea, there is a scanner in there too but with all the other radios, it is usually turned down or off. The selectivity and sensitivity of a Motorola or Kenwood mobile radio will beat most scanners without a fight.

CB is about the only thing don't keep in the truck because I haven't used it since I got my ham radio license. However, I do have the radio and a magnetic antenna in the garage in case I need it for something.

    So, what's for lunch.
Even the burger-flippers at McDonald's probably have some McWackers.

I don't have a CB in the car or at home since I haven't used that band in years. I have a scanner and a trunktracker in the car along with a Kenwood TM-D700 VHF/VHF mobile runing APRS with Ui-View on a laptop computer. At home I have my ham radio station and scanners for monitoring anything which interests me. I moderate a Yahoo Group for scanner users in the Greater Baton Rouge area. Most people I know who use radio outside of the job are ham radio operators. Very few have CB but those who do only use it to monitor CH 19 when traveling.
