Default Can you make change for a 200? (Yes, two hundred)

Clerks accept $200 bills bearing Bush picture, make change

    Reuters
    Updated: 8:26 p.m. ET Sept. 1, 2004

PHILADELPHIA - At first glance it looked like the real thing, so store clerk Kathryn Miller was happy to accept the $200 bill as payment — and even make change.

The bill did carry a picture of President Bush, but he is not one of the presidents who appear on U.S. currency. And in any case, there is no such thing as a $200 bill.

That did not stop Miller, who works at Fashion Bug, a women’s clothing store in Greensburg, Pa., from taking the bill in payment for an item costing $99.

She also gave change to Deborah Trautwine, a resident of nearby Jeanette, said Jeanne Martin, a spokeswoman for the state police in Greensburg.

“Anyone with any bit of knowledge should have recognized that it wasn’t the real thing,” Martin said.

Trautwine, who was located by police on the basis of information from the clothing store, was charged Wednesday with forgery, theft by deception and receiving stolen property.

The bill was probably a joke rather than a forgery, said Martin. “It was some sort of gag money,” she said.

She didn’t know whether Miller still works at Fashion Bug.

Perhaps Miller shouldn't feel too bad, since, as they say, misery loves company.

Police in Kentucky are looking for a customer who succeeded in paying for a $2 order at a fast-food restaurant with another phony $200 bill. Authorities say the cashier at a Dairy Queen in Danville gave the culprit $198 in real money as change.

Police in Kentucky are looking for a customer who succeeded in paying for a $2 order at a fast-food restaurant with a phony $200 bill like the one passed in Pennsylvania. The back of the bill features lawn signs saying things such as “We like broccoli.”

    From 2003:

SEPTEMBER 12--North Carolina cops are searching for a guy who successfully passed a $200 bill bearing George W. Bush's portrait and a drawing of the White House complete with lawn signs reading "We like ice cream" and "USA deserves a tax cut." The phony Bush bill--a copy of which you'll find below--was presented to a cashier at a Food Lion in Roanoke Rapids on September 6 by an unidentified male who was seeking to pay for $150 in groceries. Remarkably, the cashier accepted the counterfeit note and gave the man $50 change. In a separate incident involving a different perp, Roanoke Rapids cops Tuesday arrested Michael Harris, 24, for attempting last month to pass an identical $200 Bush bill at a convenience store.

It seems like the Treasurey has been busy issuing new bills...

It is remarkable that people are stupid enough to take these as legal tender.

I guess if they were brilliant, they wouldn't be making a career out of being clerks.....

They can't help themselves, it's the failing public school system. The Public School System is failing because of George Bush and the Republicans.....oops, thought I was at a Teachers Union Meeting...

    Talking That's different..............

The $200 Bill reminds me about the guy who created a $18 Bill. Looked good, Bill Clinton's picture and all, so he ran off a batch. Then, he had to figure out how to pass them off as real. He thought about it, then loaded the money in the car, and headed off to the hills of West Virginia. First General Store he came to, he stopped, took an 18 and walked into the store. Clerk looked up, "Kin Ah Hep Y'all? City Slicker said "Yeah, got change for an 18? Clerk said "Sure, Yew want 2 nines or 3 sixes?"

    Talking Mr. President..................... .

Mr. President, I rise to make a motion that we institute the 3 Dollar bill, and that we place Mini me's Picture on it, and also that we replace "E.Pluribus Unim" on the back with "Engineers drive Fire Trucks, Operators work at the Phone Company". Thank you.
