    scfire86,

This seems to be the only talking point you know and it's getting old. When are you going to get it through your head? What Kerry did in Viet Nam means nothing to me and I don't attack him for being there, even if it was for only 4 months (pun intended). What Bush did in the guard means nothing to me or the vast majority of combat vets that I know personally (and that's alot of vets), he didn't accuse the combat vets of war crimes and cause permanent harm to those that served in country and the POW's for personal and political gain!!!! Bush didn't meet with the enemy in Paris or Nicaragua in order to undermine the the military and the U.S. Government. What counts is what Kerry did after his return and his subsequent actions that STILL effects everyone of us who returned home to pure hatered and distain for his own political agenda. Kerry chose the battlefield and the Viet Nam combat vets and POW's are reacting, as is their right and duty.

The LA Times, now there's a true unbiased paper. Now please post something from CBS and Rather.

This is good stuff. During the Clinton admin we were told about how character counts. And it was one of the reasons the nation had to endure an investigation into a land deal back in the 80's and listen to how he dodged the draft the same way as Cheney and others.

Then we move on to the inevitable charge of personal political gain. How do you know it was for personal gain? There was a war on as you well know. Could it be possible that he and many others were frustrated at the lack of official action in trying to stop the killing? Or is that the only way conservatives view conflict?

And Bush has never done anything for personal or political gain? Now whose being naive?

And I knew the inevitable charge of the 'liberal media' would be your tagline.

I'm more than happy to accept the slant the Times when you accept the National Review is no less skewed to the right.

It all goes back to the fact that people can't support Kerry for his record as lt Gov in Mass, or his Senate career. People voting for Kerry aren't Kerry supporters, per se, they are anti Bush.

    Here is the problem.

...In 1972, he failed to take an annual flight physical that was standard among his fellow pilots. As a result, his commanders grounded him. By 1973, his superiors were forced to file a near-blank evaluation, conceding they had neither seen him in a year nor received any reports from his new overseers in Alabama.

Bush and his aides have changed their explanation for the missed physical. They said four years ago that he could not get to his family doctor, then later raised the phaseout of the fighters he flew. But the wide array of Guard pilots interviewed said it was part of their culture to always be ready and never miss a physical....

In 1992 we were asked to overlook such insignificant details since they occurred so long ago. Yet we were told a man's character from a land deal gone bad (which lost money) 20 years ago was reason to believe he was unfit to be POTUS.

Yet we are told that someone who has never been able to account for his time or find someone who can account for his time during his military obligation should in no way be indicative of his current character and that we should focus on the future.

Blast away at Kerry all you want for his critical nature of policy when he came home. The term Free Fire Zone and its implications were well known. But not being able to account for such a long stretch of time is an insult to all those who did sign up (or were drafted) and did their duty. I know of no one in the regular or active reserve who has such blank spots in their records. If any other person who served with an honorable discharge can produce something (i.e. DD 214) that depicts similar allowed behavior I will vote for Bush.

Like its been said here before, i don't care if he was drunk and dancing naked on a table at a cantina in mexico when he was suposed to be at a guard meeting.. better than voting for a liar and a phony azz war hero who can't make up his mind on anything.

In March 1986, Kerry said, during a speech on the Senate floor, that, "I remember Christmas of 1968 sitting on a gunboat in Cambodia. I remember what it was like to be shot at by the Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge and Cambodians, and have the president of the United States telling the American people that I was not there; the troops were not in Cambodia. I have that memory which is seared — seared — in me...."

Boston Herald in 1979, "I remember spending Christmas Eve of 1968 five miles across the Cambodian border being shot at by our South Vietnamese allies who were drunk and celebrating Christmas. The absurdity of almost being killed by our own allies in a country in which President Nixon claimed there were no American troops was very real."
    ----------------------------------------------------
Or in the words of Roy Hoffmann

The widely repeated myth of "John Kerry, the Vietnam Navy Hero" is one of the most dishonorable and dangerous deceptions ever perpetrated upon the American public.

John Kerry is not a hero. He built this facade with unabashed personal promotion, aided and abetted by a supportive liberal media ready and willing to repeat in print his gross exaggerations, distortions of fact, and outright lies about his abbreviated four-month, 12-day tour of duty in Vietnam.

Bush Guard Service, the True Story
    Written by Gordon Bloyer
    Thursday, August 26, 2004

Here is the full and true story of President Bush's Air National Guard service. There are no UNANSWERED questions. There are no missing records. He did not miss any meetings. The truth is known. You can find everything in this article, in other publications but none of the others are complete. You have to put them all together to get the full story. It is a shame that our national ''objective'' media refuse to do their job and put the whole story together.

First, in answer to the charge that Bush was AWOL or missed meetings, George Bush was NEVER assigned to the Alabama Guard. This is a myth promoted by the ''objective'' media. Here is what really happened. Here is what the head of the Alabama Guard said.

Turnipseed states that Bush was never ordered to report to the Alabama Air National Guard. He points out that Bush never transferred from the Texas Air National Guard to the Alabama Air National Guard. He remained in the Texas Guard during his stay in Alabama. This was confirmed by the Texas Guard. And Turnipseed added that Bush was never under his command or any other officer in the Alabama Guard.

Turnipseed added that Bush was informed of the drill schedule of the Alabama Guard as a courtesy so he could get credit for drills while in Alabama for his service record in the Texas Guard. There was no compulsory attendance. This was also confirmed by the Texas Guard.

This was reported in the Chicago Sun-Times and has never been picked up by any other news organization. Turnipseed then also added:

For Bush to be ''AWOL'' or ''away without leave,'' he would have had to have been assigned to a unit and under its command.

For the liberals reading this, go back and read it again. You see, Bush did NOT miss any meetings. The whole argument is nonsense. He got permission from his commanding officer to go to Alabama and attend meetings as a courtesy so he could attend when he could. Another part of this attack is that no one saw Bush at the meetings he did attend. It was reported that Turnipseed never saw Bush. Read what was reported about that.

Turnipseed reversed gear after retired Lt. Col. John ''Bill'' Calhoun went public to say that not only did he remember Bush in Alabama, but that it was Turnipseed himself that introduced the two. Oops. And really...the media is completely asleep at the switch on this one. How many people that you saw a few times do you remember from 30 years ago?

Why didn't fellow pilots see Bush in Alabama? The planes being flown by the Alabama Guard were not the same as the F102 that Bush was trained on. Why would pilots see him if he was not flying? That is why Lt. Col. Calhoun came forward to say that was Bush was in his office for study and drill time. Remember he was not assigned to the unit; he did NOT have to be there.

The following is from a letter by Col. William Campenni Ret. published in the Washington Times:

There was one big exception to this abusive use of the Guard to avoid the draft, and that was for those who wanted to fly, as pilots or crew members. Because of the training required, signing up for this duty meant up to 2½ years of active duty for training alone, plus a high probability of mobilization. A fighter-pilot candidate selected by the Guard (such as Lt. Bush and I) would be spending the next two years on active duty going through basic training (six weeks), flight training (one year), survival training (two weeks) and combat crew training for his aircraft (six to nine months), followed by local checkout (up to three more months) before he was even deemed combat-ready. Because the draft was just two years, you sure weren't getting out of duty being an Air Guard pilot. If the unit to which you were going back was an F-100, you were mobilized for Vietnam. Avoiding service? Yeah, tell that to those guys. The Bush critics do not comprehend the dangers of fighter aviation at any time or place, in Vietnam or at home, when they say other such pilots were risking their lives or even dying while Lt. Bush was in Texas. Our Texas ANG unit lost several planes right there in Houston during Lt. Bush's tenure, with fatalities. Just strapping on one of those obsolescing F-102s was risking one's life.

Here is some information that the ''objective'' media avoids telling you. John Kerry joined the Navy Reserve, he did not JOIN the Navy. The Reserve was just like the National Guard. Kerry did NOT know he would be sent to Vietnam.

George Bush joined the Guard for a SIX-year term. If you are drafted, you only have to serve TWO years. Bush probably did not need to pull strings to get into a jet fighter unit. Jets required a greater time commitment than normal Guard postings. Pilots from the unit that he joined were being sent to Vietnam. All the publications that have researched this have concluded that there is NO evidence that he used any influence to get into the Guard. The liberal publications will say that there is no evidence, but it is still suspicious. That is a good journalistic standard? So, do you get it? Bush joined a unit that at the time was serving in Vietnam.

The following is research from aerospaceweb.org:

Nevertheless, we have established that the F-102 was serving in combat in Vietnam at the time Bush enlisted to become an F-102 pilot. In fact, pilots from the 147th FIG of the Texas ANG were routinely rotated to Vietnam for combat duty under a program called ''Palace Alert'' from 1968 to 1970. Palace Alert was an Air Force program that sent qualified F-102 pilots from the ANG to bases in Europe or southeast Asia for periods of three to six months for frontline duty. Fred Bradley, a friend of Bush's who was also serving in the Texas ANG, reported that he and Bush inquired about participating in the Palace Alert program. However, the two were told by a superior, MAJ Maurice Udell, that they were not yet qualified since they were still in training and did not have the 500 hours of flight experience required. Furthermore, ANG veteran COL William Campenni, who was a fellow pilot in the 111th FIS at the time, told the Washington Times that Palace Alert was winding down and not accepting new applicants.

As he was completing training and being certified as a qualified F-102 pilot, Bush's squadron was a likely candidate to be rotated to Vietnam. However, the F-102 was built for a type of air combat that wasn't seen during that conflict, and the plane was withdrawn from southeast Asia in December 1969. The F-102 was instead returned to its primary role of providing air defense for the United States. In addition, the mission of Ellington AFB, where Bush was stationed, was also changing from air defense alert to training all F-102 pilots in the US for Air National Guard duty. Lt. Bush remained in the ANG as a certified F-102 pilot who participated in frequent drills and alerts through April of 1972. ... By this time, the 147th Fighter Wing was also beginning to transition from the F-102 to the F-101F, an updated version of the F-101B used primarily for air defense patrols. Furthermore, the war in Vietnam was nearing its end and the US was withdrawing its forces from the theater. Air Force personnel returning to the US created a glut of active-duty pilots, and there were not enough aircraft available to accommodate all of the qualified USAF and ANG pilots. Since USAF personnel had priority for the billets available, many of the Air National Guard pilots whose enlistments were nearly complete requested early release. The ANG was eager to fulfill these requests because there was not enough time to retrain F-102 pilots to operate new aircraft before their enlistments were up anyway. Bush was one of those forced out by the transition, and he was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant in October 1973, eight months before his six-year enlistment was complete. Bush had approximately 600 flight hours by the time he completed his military service.

    The folks at aerospaceweb concluded:

While Bush did not see combat in Vietnam, it is also obvious that he was not seeking a way to avoid the risk of being sent to Vietnam. At the time he was training to be an F102 pilot, ANG units and that aircraft type were based in Vietnam.

In conclusion, there is no evidence that Bush got special treatment to join the Guard. He did NOT miss any meetings, and he was not assigned to the Alabama Guard. The reason the so called ''objective'' media holds onto this myth is that it lets them keep asking, ''Where was Bush?'' The issue of his being grounded is also answered because he would no longer be flying since his plane was obsolete and he did not have enough Guard time left to train in a new jet. You don’t need to report for a physical if you are not flying. Duh!

Kerry joined the Navy Reserve and did not expect to go to Vietnam. When Kerry did go to Vietnam the swift boats were not dping river patrols. They were doing coastal patrols and were not in much danger. That is when he volunteered to join the Swiftees. The assignment of those boats was changed after he was accepted for the duty. Surprise, he got action and the rest is disputed history.

The information in this article was published in George Magazine, New York Times, Washington Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Washington Post, and on aerospaceweb.org.

I just wish Kerry would have a secret meeting with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and do a little negotiating like he did with the communist north Vietnamese.

    scfire86,

What do know of free fire zones in Viet Nam besides nothing accept what Kerry is lying about. Kerry gave a totally false statement as to free fire zones and what was allowed within those areas. I spent 16 months in country to Kerry's 4, I think I know a lot more about free fire zones than you or kerry.

In his book Soldier (1973) Anthony Herbert discusses the concept extensively. Since it is on my bookshelf and not on the web, I can't post any links.

He never ran for public office. I have no idea of his political affiliation. He wrote the book way back when no one had heard of George Bush or John Kerry.

Most books at that time were written purely for sensationalism. I know what a free zone was, as I operated in them on almost a daily basis while on patrol or on ambush. Free fire zones were not as kerry depicted them as.

    Default Was John Kerry A.W.O.L?

    Was John Kerry A.W.O.L?

While the left questions where George Bush was during the final year of his obligation, they and the press ignore completely the similar obligations of John Kerry. John Kerry enlisted in the Navy and signed an Officer Candidate Agreement on February 18, 1966. This agreement called for the Candidate to Par 3 to serve a total period of 6 years in the Naval Reserve of the United States, including active and inactive duty.

Par 4 agrees that on completion of active duty, he will remain for Service in the Ready Reserve for a period which when added to his active duty will total 5 years. Upon completion of 5 years of satisfactory service on active duty and in the Ready Reserve he will be eligible to transfer to the Standby Reserve for the remaining portion of his service obligation.

Par 5 the candidate understands that the provisions of law require satisfactory participation in the Ready Reserve, unless relieved of such participation by competent authority or as provided by law. Such participation may be satisfied annually by not less 48 drills and not more than 17days active duty for training.

Lt. John Forbes Kerry was released from active duty and transferred to the Naval Reserve on 3 January 1970. He wasn’t transferred to inactive standby status until 1 July 1972, then Honorably Discharged on 16 February 1978. Where was Lt. Kerry during the18 months from 1970 to 1972? Did he attend the required drills and active duty that he agreed to? Was he AWOL or did he violate his agreed commitment on accepting a commission as an officer in the service of the United States.

We do know that he made an unauthorized trip to Paris in June of 1970 to meet with Madam Win Thi Binh, the Foreign Minister of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of Vietnam (PRG) -- the political wing of the Vietcong -- and with representatives of Hanoi who were in Paris for the peace talks-- in direct violation of the UCMJ's Article 104 part 904, and U.S. Code 18 U.S.C. 953. That meeting, and Kerry's subsequent coddling of Communists while leading mass protests against our military in the year that followed, also place him in direct violation of our Constitution's Article three, Section three, which defines treason as "giving aid and comfort" to the enemy in time of warfare. In April of 1971 he went before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs claiming all kinds of atrocities on the part of his fellow comrades in arms in further in violation of Article 3.

While John Kerry’s hero status is in question in the United States he is still considered a hero in Vietnam where his picture is in a place of honor in the Vietnam War Museum in Ho Chi Minh City. He is honored for leading the Vietnam Veterans against the War and helping the Communists bring the war to conclusion.

It is time we ask where was John Kerry during his Reserve Commitment. Was he AWOL as his supporters want to say is the case with George Bush? And, did he violate the Code of Military Justice, the Geneva Convention and the United States Constitution in his actions as a Naval Officer.

So you were aware of the circumstances behind every free fire zone that happened during the US involvement in Vietnam?

Lt. Vote for who you will. But know this about the Bush machine. If you ran for public office against him, I guarantee you they would find a way to trash your service to country.

One need only look back at how they went after Max Cleland (morphing him into Osama Bin Laden) or John McCain (a GOP I would consider giving a vote) when he ran against Bush. If that is respect for one's service to country, I'll pass.

And since you didn't mind quoting the Village Voice when you believed it supported your positions, here's a story that contradicts your perceptions of Kerry's Senate testimony.

Anyone who wants to can go after my military record; it's not something I would even be bothered about. I would sign SF 180 and let them make the choice. I have nothing to hide but Kerry is refusing to sign that form, which puts him in a position to be questioned (all of Bush's records have been released). He has refused to release over 100 pages of his records and this tells me he has something he doesn't want anyone to know about.

If you honestly believe that the VVAJK and the Swift Vets are controlled by the Bush campaign, you’re in a dream world. I belong to both organizations and many of these vets are democrats and hate Kerry for what he did. We all see him as a self-serving individual with no real concern for anyone but himself and a traitor and conspirator. There is nothing, absolutely nothing that Bush, the republicans or anyone else could do to back these groups off. They would tell Bush and the republicans to take a hike.

Unlike Kerry, I didn't and refused to bash or accuse my brothers in arms of being war criminals because it just was not true. Kerry painted us all with a wide brush and he was totally wrong. I would never have gone to France to meet with the enemy and then state that we should accept their terms. It would not have been my place to do so as a member of the armed forces and not a government official. I would have been a traitor to my brothers and the United States if I were to do so. It caused us all a lot of pain and especially the POW's. What Kerry did caused the war to continue when the enemy was on the verge of total defeat (they admit to that). Once the VVAW and their cohorts like Kerry and Hanoi Jane started their crap, it literally breathed new life into the enemy and they knew from then on that it was only a matter of time. Remember, Kerry brought it to the forefront in his campaign, no one else did.

There were rules of engagement in free fire zones and they were to be obeyed by all units. Some units may very well have broken those rules but the units I was in were not inclined to do so.

Last but not least, Kerry's senate record is one of the worst and most liberal (even more so than Kennedy) in senate history. He has never introduced any major legislation of importance and when he tried even his own party members stopped it even before floor discussions. I did a lot of research on his record and it is simply dismal and totally left wing. His actions on the Intelligence Committee were outrageous and his desire to cut the intelligence budget by 70% during the mid 90's was ill conceived. His record is one of tax hikes and creating a welfare state with entitlement programs.

Your right, I as you will vote for who is considered the right individual. Just as it should be.

YES, I WROTE THREE EDITORIALS ON JOHN KERRY.

You have my permission to copy and paste my first, second, and third editorials on John Kerry, or repro them Don Bendell

FORMER GREEN BERET TACKLES KERRY AGAIN!

Thank you, John Kerry, for helping make us Vietnam veterans war heroes now, but you also were the primary reason that the American public grabbed sturdy unbending brooms of judgment and swept us into the closet of silence and shame for so many years. Now, with your latest unreported insanity, you are getting ready for our society to grab those same stiff brooms and sweep our brave, noble young men and women fighting against the War on Terror in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, into that cold, dark cell of heartbreak and betrayal, like we Vietnam veterans had to endure in silent dignity. I cannot and will not watch this country go through that again.

The hardcore America-hating, Israel-hating, jihad-spouting Muslim clerics in the mid east are very excited and passing around a front page newspaper story from the very anti-American TEHRAN TIMES in Iran. In the country that is home of the world's toughest theocratic dictatorship, an e-mail from Democratic Presidential nominee, you, John Forbes Kerry, sent to the paper by your campaign committee, although they deny sending it, was printed word-for-word on the front page of Iran's main newspaper. Your message states emphatically that, if elected President, you, John Kerry plan to travel to the mid east and els ewhere and apologize for our actions and the actions of President Bush in the War on Terror. You are already apologizing. It says that you plan to apologize to friends and foes alike. That is right, folks. John Kerry will say he is 'sorry,' and in his mind, all those jihad
extremists, who have vowed to kill all Americans wherever we are, will simply forgive us, hold hands with Kerry, start singing 'Kumbaya,' and all will be right in the world. This is insane! You have also made statements you will do these actions within 100 days of becoming President.

Senior writer Kenneth R. Timmerman in the March 1st edition of INSIGHT, tells about the massive campaign contributions to the Kerry-for-President campaign by three Iranian businessmen living in the US, who are lobbying for the US lifting of sanctions on Iran and accepting the anti-Christian, anti-Jewish, anti-American Tehran regime
and the close ties of one to the chairman of Mobil Oil.

"Pro-democracy dissidents" in Iran are shocked and appalled at your remarks, and have reported that in Iran and other Mid eastern countries, that all the extremists and anti-west mullahs who strongly supported the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, USS Cole, Marine Barracks, and anyplace Americans congregate, want you to become our President, but they are scared to death of George W. Bush. Just think, The Democratic candidate for President, you, John Forbes Kerry, is endorsed by the Al Q'Aida, Hezbollah, PLF, and Hamas.

But on February 27, 2004, in a speech at UCLA , you, while trying to talk tough, despite voting against all major weapons systems for the past 18 years, stated that you will continue the War on Terror, but would use our police forces, and especially those in foreign countries, and you would also put our troops back under the powder blue flag of the United Nations. You recently made comments about Bush making troops fight without Kevlar vests, but you, Senator Kerry, voted against buying them while you were in the Senate. Senate Bill 1689. Passed 87-12. You
were one of the 12. Remember?

Like the Kama Sutra, Senator, you change positions constantly. You're not going to end the War on Terror, but
instead use police to handcuff terrorists and read them their rights; then a week later, you are going to end the
War on Terrorism and apologize to everyone we have offended, such as Iran. What is it going be next week, John Kerry? You flip-flop more than a beached tuna on steroids.

You convinced TV reporters Chris Wallace on Fox and NBC's Tim Russert that a photograph circulating the web and news showing you a few rows away from Jane Fonda at a September, 1970 Anti-War Rally at Valley Forge, was simply a coincidence and that you and Hanoi Jane barely knew each other. But, in fact, Senator, there were only 8 speakers that day, including Fonda, Donald Southerland, and Bella Abzug, and Hanoi Jane funded that rally, and the keynote speaker was you, John Forbes Kerry, executive committee member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

We must be Americans first, and think about our political parties after that. Sometimes we lose sight of that. I have six grown children and two are democrats. I voted for Jimmy Carter. This is not about politics. It is about standing up to the ultimate playground bully, and not simply cowering and kissing his shoes.

I left it "all on the field" in the jungles back there when I was medevaced out of Vietnam in March of 1969 and sent back to hospitals in "The World." Although you, Mr. Kerry, painted all of us Vietnam veterans with the yellow brush of My Lai, most of us, draftees and lifers alike, actually poured our hearts out in the tropical rain forests and in the rice paddies, thoroughly gave it our all, and acted as warriors who had honor. I have a son earning his green beret at Fort Bragg right now and a daughter-in-law who was on orders for Iraq but is making me a grandpa again. I am not going to stand by and watch them go through the same treatment we did, because some of our well-meaning fellow Americans choose to wear blinders and believe things just because they heard it on the network news or simply not care enough to get involved.

I am not a "baby-killer, torturer, or murderer," John Kerry. I am a Vietnam veteran and an American who will not soon forget, or ever want to see again, any more jets loaded with fuel and screaming, innocent Americans slamming into our buildings on our very own soil. I have shed enough tears for ten lifetimes. We all have. I will never again let my fellow countrymen get away with making American veterans feel like bastard stepchildren.

Santayana said, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

John Kerry, I now call on my "Band of Brothers," those who have heard the sound of guns and cries of orphaned children, those who hate war more than anyone who has not been there, to join me in this difficult battle ahead. Republicans, democrats, independents, and the apolitical, I call on the 25,000,000 veterans of this country to help me confront this evil facing our great nation, not with guns and bombs, but with our voices, our votes, our computers, and with all our fighting spirit.

My fellow veterans, your families, survivors, and neighbors: God bless you and God bless America.

This is hysterical. We are led to believe an article written by the LA Times is 'liberal' and therefore unreliable, but supposed to take as gospel publications biased to conservatives.

What few articles I read on the links posted only proved that neither side has any shortage of the lunatic fringe.
Politics is like driving. To go forward select "D", to go backward select "R."

Taxes and firearms and the military are the only records that he has to show a record with any consistency.
