Grants.gov is one place to start. Your state may have money available (Pennsylvania has a modest, though appreciated grant program). Check with your city/town officials, they may have info about money available...
We got three grants this year, the FEMA grant for new SCBA, one from the Dept of Forestry (or something like that, can't remember for sure) for wildland turnout gear, and one from PA for money to go toward a new "Station Two". Some of the grants takes some digging to find, but they're out there. Good luck!
The US Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development Agency has a program that has gotten us 50k towards a new pumper (after FEMA turned us down twice) and 35% of the cost of a new building for our 2nd station. Search for USDA Rural Development or look up their regional office near you.

WASHINGTON, July 6, 2004-Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman today announced that $100 million is committed for a new USDA First Responder Initiative to support rural emergency responder efforts by prioritizing the financing for needed equipment and services.

We recieved a partial grant to purchase and update a very nice used pumper last year. Approx $32000. Before you apply find out home much max grant you can obtain is. We went about it logically (max $ we can comeup with and what we think will cost for something that will work, then asked for grant for the difference). Grant possible is based on income levels in your community.
As I recall the max grant last year was $50-60k. With a bank loan and some local $ get you into a very nice used pumper with equipment (as we did) or even a "beer budget" new pumper. Not a good a deal as FireGrant but you will know quickly.
Apparently now more USDA $ are going into 1st resp than before so perhaps your chances go up.
