    Default Another Box?

Jay, what's this with TWO box alarms in one week? And whoever was doing the dispatching on Ifern was, shall we say, a wee bit lost?

    Default Gosh I'm tired.

There's been more fire in DeKalb County in the last month than the last three or five years!

This was a three-stack dryer with heavy fire in the top unit. Had to unload the whole thing. Fifteen hundred bushels. That's why the second alarm.

Why can't people have fires at 5 in the afternoon?

Like I was sayin', it really wasn't much. Just a lot of grunt work.

For reference of scale, the door to the shed under the dryers is about 12 feet tall.

I noticed the dispatcher didn't advise cross streets at the end of the first level dispatch or the "units switch to and acknowledge on Ifern".

Jim, I also noticed that after she stumbled through the initial dispatch that she called two depts that were supposed to respond....and that was it. I never heard her finish the dispatch. And then there was the usual cross-chatter between depts until Jay struck out the box.

There's a fair amount of turnover in our dispatch center. What do you expect when you only pay them $29K to start.

It's kinda funny; I set our rural box cards up where the first level only brings in two tankers. So a second alarm isn't really that big of a deal. But she was worried about where staging was to be when I first requested a box. "It's only two tankers sunshine, and they ain't gonna be stickin around long."

I overheard a little bit of traffic from Elburn; seems they didn't know where our station was.

    On a humourous side note:
Jeff, you've been to Hinckley, drove passed our station. Ain't much to speak of. Inside the station we've got a dry-erase board where we can list equipment that is out or missing. Somebody from the fill-in companies wrote under "Missing Equipment:" TV, lazy-boy chairs, and fully-stocked frige. I'm just guessing here, but I don't think it was Big Rock.....

And that's sad too, my dept starts at 36K.

LOL! That's the dept that had so much trouble trying to figure out where they were supposed to go.

They won't be able to post that once the new station is up and running

I'm sure that the chatter at the Elburn fire station has since turned to :"hey; we got our name in Firehouse.com!
Or maybe they have computers on their wish list along with GPS!
So; is there a college for dispatchers?

Jay, you're right about this - seen a picture of it in another thread here.

On another note, our dispatchers would love to be starting at 29k. If I remember right, their top pay after a lot of years is under $14/hr. CR brings up an interesting point, IS there a college for dispatchers? We've been looking for someplace for our new ones to get decent training other than OJT. Seems it exists for cops down here but can't find much for fire & ems.

Most depts I'm aware of are all OJT, then send them to whatever "basic" dispatch classes are available. All ours are OJT until around 6-9 months then we send them to basic police/fire dispatch then to EMD. There's lotsa APCO classes around but some are pretty expensive. Our folks seem to like the NEMERT classes better as they focus more on local issues. There used to be a class called ILETTS taught by the ISP but I understand it died a pretty nasty death......

    Jack, try these links;

I'm sure MrJim has some others to offer also.....
