Oct. 15, 2004
Video News Report:
A terrible crash on Redwood Road tonight killed a one-year old-girl and sent eight people to the hospital.
Sam Penrod is live on the Nightbeat with what happened.
It was a terrible scene out here and is a very sad situation, where two families got caught in the middle when a pickup truck swerved into the wrong side of the road.
The crash happened on Redwood Road at the south end of the valley near Camp Williams.
A pickup truck was heading southbound, when for some reason it drifted into the northbound lanes of traffic.
Two cars swerved to get out of the way, to avoid a head on collision, but they lost control and crashed.
Five people were in the black car and all of them were taken to the hospital in serious condition.
But the white car went over the embankment, and a one year old girl was killed, her four year old sister seriously hurt and their father was critically injured and airlifted to the hospital.
"Sgt. Rosie Rivera, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Dept."WHEN YOU HAVE A VEHICLE COMING AT YOU YOU TEND TO VEER OFF AND TRY TO AVOID IT. UNTIL THE INVESTIGATION IS OVER, IT'S REALLY TOUGH TO SAY WHAT COULD'VE PREVENTED THE ACCIDENT."
We talked to several other drivers who witnessed the crash, who told us they feared they were going to get hit themselves.
The driver of the truck that investigators say caused the crash, walked away with no serious injuries.
Police are now investigating what caused the crash and why the driver drove into the wrong lane.
So far, investigators say there are no obvious signs that drugs or alcohol were a factor in this very sad accident.Front line since 1983 and still going strong
