The trustees have adopted NIMS under resolution, but we have not yet started training the department. Only myself and the chief have been trained so far.

Same here, adopted the resolution and started training with the CD. Hope to have everybody done by the end of the year so we can take the next class in Jan. or Feb.

And while you're at it, jump over to IACOJ and read my article Voice of Reason-The Secret of NIMS.
It will unlock the secret!

It's official!
At last night's trustee meeting, we adopted and signed the NIMS ordinance for our fire protection district. It is a very simple, one page document patterned after Galesburg's ordinance.
If anyone would like to see a copy, email me at rockysroom@winco.net.

When does NIMS have to be passed by? Is it just for Fire Depts? I have never heard it discussed around here. I have seen several area municipalities pass it.
I don't know much about it. If someone could E-mail me a copy of an ordinance I would apreciate it.

Here's a sample!
Here is a sample of a NIMS resolution/ordinance.
Feel free to "borrow" it.
Hope this helps my fellow flatlanders in some small way.(Your Fire Department Name Here)
Resolution No. 2004-(Insert # Here)
Whereas, Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-5 establishes the National Incident Management System (NIMS); and
Whereas, the Trustees/Commissioners of the (Insert You Fire Department Name Here) Fire Department/Fire Protection District believe it is in the best interest of the City/Village/Fire Protection District that the National Incident Management System (NIMS) be adopted; and
Whereas, the NIMS establishes a single, comprehensive approach to domestic incident management to ensure that all levels of government across the Nation have the capability to work efficiently and effectively together using a national approach to domestic incident management; and
Whereas, the NIMS provides a consistent nationwide approach for Federal, State and local governments to work together to prepare for and respond to, and recover from domestic incidents regardless of the cause, size or complexity; and
Whereas, the NIMS provides for interoperability and compatibility among Federal, State, and local capabilities and includes a core set of concepts, principles, terminology and technology and technologies covering the Incident Command System, Unified Command, training, management of resources and reporting; and
Whereas, beginning October 1, 2004, all Federal departments and agencies shall make adoption of the NIMS a requirement for providing Federal preparedness assistance through grants, contracts or other activities to local governments;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE TRUSTEES/COMMISSIONERS OF (YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT NAME HERE) FIRE DEPARTMENT/FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT, (YOUR COUNTY NAME), ILLINOIS;
SECTION ONE: That the Trustees/Commissioners of (Your Fire Department Name Here) Fire Department/Fire Protection District hereby adopts the National Incident Management System (NIMS) as the system of preparing for and responding to disaster incidents.

Don't forget that just passing the ordinance and some one attending the NIMS class does not make you compliant!
You have to have a 4 hour validation exercise and annual training to actually adopt NIMS. They want to know if you can make Unified Command work at an incident when the crap hits the fan.Proudly serving as Vice-President of the Illinois Delegation of the IACOJ

What are some examples of the validation exercise that some agencies are using?
Will the online course on the FEMA website work, or does it have to be a class?

I think IFSI and IEMA are doing the courses. You need to set one up with them. I've heard they're having some difference of opinion as to which one is the "official" class so it may be good to do some checking first before setting one up.

Not to worry folks. Unless your Department is in massive disarray, all will indeed be well.
