It's reported the DHS is pursuing this technology, with the goal of using Trunk Monkeys to provide security to unoccupied firehouses (such as volunteer stations, or career departments when they're out on calls). Trunk Monkeys would also be able to secure ambulances, police cruisers, and propane trucks to prevent their theft by terrorists.
In the long run DHS believes this could open the window for a tremendous increase in firefighter staffing in the nation, for if they're able to genetically breed only slightly dumber chimps they'd have the perfect employee to assign to engine companies.
