Hi
I would like to hear from fellow firefighters that know of any fire staions with Brass poles that are still in active service. Also where I can find pictures of them. Thanks

We still have a brass pole, although it is not in-service. It goes from out upstairs dormatory to the office area. If you would like, I can get a picture or two.

The Houston Fire Department has a number of stations with brass poles still in service. Another large number have larger diameter aluminum poles. My station still has brass ones. You can see some of them on our website. Do a search for Houston Fire Department Station 68 or go www.houstonfire.com and look at the links page for the website.
Stay low and move it in.Stay low and move it in.

Well since we are on the subject of Texas Galveston st. 1 has poles. Fort worth St 2 has a pole. Dallas St 11 has a pole. Austin St 4 has a pole. Bellaire in Houston area has poles. Dallas has a few others I believe. Houston has 9, 21, 22, 7, 68, 2, 19, 68, 16 and a few others. That is all that I know. chris

Here is a picture of an Austin Fire Dept. station with brass pole. I think this is station 18 in the mid 1960's, but not sure. Here's the
link for the AFD history site where I got the pic if interested.

ummm, I know this might be a radically new concept, but maybe by taking the stairs? you can even take them down, as well as up (hence the term, downstairs)....Originally posted by Parrothead

Two of our members hanging out by the pole, would have been a good shot but I wanted to block out their faces in case they didn't want to be posted all over the web.

We have one, but ours is short. It leads from the hallway outside the bunkroom to the hallway that goes to the engine bay.

Hmmm....I use the pole to get to the first floor. That bumpy slide you call "the stairs" is to hard on my bottom!

All but a couple of single storey Fire Stations in London have Polehouses...the older ones have Brass poles the newer ones (Post 1960's construction) have larger alluminium poles.
There are also a couple of very old Stations that had them removed for safety reasons...Steve Dude
