Wet moping, is when you actually have water to mop up the fire. Mop up is extinguishing all burning material, and trying to remove all the heat from the fire. It sure makes things go a lot faster. You will also hear people refer to heli-moping, when you have a helicopter do water drops after the fire is contained, just for the purpose of mopping up. Most pilots get very upset when someone tries to use them for mopup.

Not to mention, the supervisors...who flip out when they get the bill for extended hours of aircraft flight time. However, if you don't have access to drive or carry water to the fire....it's the next best thing. It doesn't always put the water exactly where you need it, e.g., burning stumps, snags, groundfire....but it acts to at least dampen the fuels.

I have directed air drops from our Huey on to areas of extensive groundfire....only because the laying of hoselines was impractical or impossible.

I know we have heli moped before, it depends on the situation. I worked for the park service this year where you can't drive off road, and there were two roads in the park. We did some helimoping, and a lot of dry mop.
