    Default Oh what to wear?!

Seeing as I found a part-time fire jr college that will get me my FF standards...IF i get hired, what is appropriate to wear around town that states that i support firefighting 100% w/o being a "whacker"?

Are shirts like:"off duty brew crew" (the shirt to the right in red) ok?http://rescuetees.com/fire_apparel2.htm

    and shirts like:

are these ok to wear around town w/ jeans. or am i still a "whacker"?

    Lightbulb Just my opinion....

99.9% of those shirts are whacker....very, very whacker (I won't even get into what I think off the "off duty brew crew" shirt). But hey, it's a free country so wear them all you want if you like them.

Thumbs down Wack - I wack, he wacks, she wacks, they wack...

I will admit that a great deal of the T-Shirts, Polo shirts and button downs I own have something to do with the IAFF, but the shirts pictured are straight wacker.

Here is how it works in Central New York.

If your a member of the IAFF, wearing IAFF clothing is perfectly fine and does not make you a whacker. Even if you have the sweatshirt, the polo shirt, the over your head wind breaker, the golf shorts, the three season jacket, the hat, the IAFF stickers on every car you own and on every car in your immediate familys, you are not a wacker, just a supporter.

Now if your a vol on the other hand, anything firematic that you wear makes you a wacker.

With that said, here is my opinion.

Have some self esteem and stop worrying about what everyone else thinks. I've been there, done that, and have the t-shirt. I wear what I want, when I want, and I don't worry about what a few select people are going to think.

I will say this. The two shirts you show up top are whacker shirts in my mind. Other than company shirts I really don't like the whole front and rear generic t-shirts with sayings and mottos on them. But if you care what I think you have issues.

I think people who wear sports clothing for a team they don't play for are wackers! You don't play for that team, your not that player so stop wearing his number like you are.........they are the wackers.

The shirts that you use for examples would be fine around other firefighters.
If you are on public display, then wear shirts with a fire organization or your fire department name on it.
I have alot of shirts and most of them are of organizations that I have belonged to. I have other fire department shirts that were given to me on an honorary basis that I wear from time to time.
I guess I even have some "wacker wear". My favorite is my "Waco Fire Department" T-shirt. Quite the novelty.
The only shirts that I personally wouldn't buy are Big Johnson and Co-ed Naked. Not appropriate for a guy in his 50s.
    But, to each his own.

Most guys I know don't wear generic FD shirts. Some wear big city shirts like E40FDNYL35 post, and many wear stuff from their own department. As long as you are not pretending to be something your not, it is generally OK.
Myself I don't like the generic "we fight what you fear" or "dragon slayer" or whatever. But I have a few big city shirts that I wear. Some basic rules, I won't wear a Chicago shirt when I'm in the city, (it is just too close to home) I wouldn't wear a FDNY shirt in NY or anywhere close, again too close to the source. Never in bars or strip clubs.

I know some people think the FDNY shirts are lame but my question is do you wear a Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, or Vinny Testaverde shirt. What is the difference?

I guess the point is if you like it, wear it and don't worry about what others think. Just don't do anything to discrace the service.

If the fire service has a "big league"; who would they be?
Chicago? New York City? LA? Dallas? Phoenix? Seattle?
See; I think some like to wear the shirts of the "big" departments just like the ones who wears the shirts of their favorite big league team.
    I think.

One of my "vices" is trading shirts. That being said, I may wear anything from Squad 288 FDNY to East Ozark FD. Typically the shirts I wear are Dept or Company shirts. Save the "I fight what you fear" shirts for somewhere else.

    Default What if...

I have buddies that sendme shirts once in awhile. Since it
was a gift or a trade, think its ok to wear? I mainly wear
these shirts in the gym so I dont muck up my good, regular
    t-shirts.

I only wear company or department t-shirts mostly from right around my local area. I also own and wear FDNY shirts, not the generic but specific ones. I wear those out of respect, not to be a wannabe or to be lame. If someone thinks they are lame then they just don't get it.
I have had non firefighters tell me that I am carrying it a bit too far by still wearing FDNY shirts and it's time to let it go.

I can't stand those whacker shirts! I wear four types of FD gear, from my department, my dad/uncle FDNY co shirts, Memorial shirts, and those I trade for outside of NY. I have great pride for the fire service, this is why I would only wear shirts which have a meaning to me.

Same holds true for the GAP, OLD NAVY, etc clothing. Can't stand wearing company specific gear. I think I have one or two JET shirts as well.

    To each thier own though!

    Exclamation

First of all, the tee shirts that are issued by my department are to worn only on duty at the fire house. They are part of the uniform and therefore ARE NOT to be worn off duty. I say are not. We all know of those who do not observe the rules or regulations. If they get caught and they do, they get there hands smacked and maybe a day or two taken away from them.

I have many types of shirts of which I have been given from members of others departments small and large, that I wear around the house. I will wear them at the gym or will working in the yard or riding my bicycle. Every time I go to a conference or meeting outside my home department, I usually will bring back another tee shirt which was given to me. My wife can wear the same size that I do so she enjoys them around the house or at the gym as well.

I do not buy any of those whackers. I just walk on by the displays at Firehouse Expo, IAFC conference, FDIC or any other places I get to. I really despise some of those ugly whackers shirts and feel that I would put my self down as well as the fire service in general if I bought one, much less to wear one of those.

If you look professional and act professional, people will look upon you are a professional. If you wear low riders pants and some ugly provocative tee shirt, people will have other ideas of you and the fire service.

OMG I HATE FRIGGIN WACKER SHIRTS!!!

I am ashamed to be a volunteer fire fighter when other members come up to me wearing a "No Fear" fire fighter or some sort of dick johnson or whatever its called. "I fight what you fear"

If they only knew what they look like...the wacker in my area are not aware that being a wacker is a sickness. They have never even heard the term wacker.

I just want to walk away and pretend I dont know them.

I am also getting tired of FDNY stuff. No beef with the FDNY, but when you have a VFD meeting and 11 out of 15 members are wearing a FDNY cap you wonder if you wandered into the wrong building. These guys need to learn to let it go man, just let it go.

I was in NYC a month ago and I can see now that the FDNY and NYPD stuff is a major franchise. So many tourists were buy that stuff up which is available everwhere so it seems.

Whats the deal with these logos? Stuff like NYPD, FDNY, FBI, ATF, etc... you see them all the time and I am sure that they are "licensed products" of said organizations. Is it leagal to produce this stuff in china and sell it to every tourist in the world?

Interesting side note. The Native Amercians in our area realy realy love the FBI stiff. They have FBI caps, shirts, sweaters, pull overs, everything. They say it realy stands for "Full Blooded Indian".

    My fire related ward robe:

2 VFD issue Polo shirts to wear to functions/training/for pictures, what have you.

1 Pierce Cap given to me after I got a ride in a brand new pierce tower ladder, from the Pierce guys at the state fire convention.

1 Rosebud Fire equipment Company hat given to me after I expended 110,000$ worth of grant funding with them over a 1 year period.

5-6 various wildfire shirts that are in wearable condition, a few that arnt. Out here in the west we have wildfires big enough to have names and their own T shirts made up. I usualy get one of these IF AND ONLY IF I worked that fire. These are nice to wear to fire camps and training since other people who were on those fires see them and you can BS about war stories.

Thats it IIRC. I dont like to advertise that I am anything when I am out in public. I let my good looks and incredible physiqe do my advertising for me...
-Brotherhood: I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
