    Default we are family..

I was doing the "vehicle shuffle" in the driveway this morning when an elderly woman pulled into the driveway after I backed the Mustang into the garage. SHe said that she heard that I detail cars on the side, and asked me how much would I charge to clean the inside of her windshield and rear window, as they were hazy and that she could not easily reach in to do them because of her arthritis. I told her that I would do it for her for free and went to grab my glass cleaner and a roll of paper towels and that I would do her windows inside and out.

I started cleaning the windows and she said to me "you know, it's still true.. we are still family... my late husband retired from the FDNY and he told me that if I ever needed anything to ask a firefighter..."

Her late husband was assigned to an engine company in the Rockaway section of Queens and did 20 years on the job. They moved to Marlborough to be closer to their children, her husband passed away shortly after they moved here. I didn't get her name, but helping one of our own sure helped to make my day!

Cap, style and grace as always. I see the image of her driving away a lot closer to her husband in her heart.

What makes this all the more special is that he would have done the same for this lady if she was "family" or not.

    You're a good man, Cap.

That's what it's all about...don't stories like that just make ya even more proud to be firefighters and to have such great "family" members all over the world?!?!

    Way to go, Captain!

As all else have said, well done.

It is things like this that are just as important as making a "grab" or saving a home from fire. The role of a public servent is not a day job by any means.

Also, things like this are excellent for smaller departments. She will tell 20 of her friends at church, who will all thell their family and then, your bond issue will pass and you will have new gear to kepp you and your buddies safe.

Of Course, being an eagle scout, I never forget to "do a good turn daily". well, at least I like to think so...

LOL, that's exactly what I was thinking HFD! Seriously though Cap, you probably made that lady's week. She's gonna' spend it thinking about what a great guy her husband was, and what an incredible "family" he was a part of. Way to go!
