    Default Chicago Fire Department

My prayers are with the Firefighters fighting todays high rise fire, as with you everyday. Stay safe, and those that went to the hospital hope you all will be fine soon and prayers to you and your families.

I'm not sure witch houses responded or who was working tonight, but if I know you I'm sure we'll talk soon and have a few drinks.

There have been some very positive articles in the Chicago Tribune about this fire.
    Even Mayor Daley was complimentary.

haven't heard much criticism this time around. I wonder if the CFD made changes or if it was just such a different situation than the last one?

I personaly think they should have not been attacked like they were the last time. The CFD does not have control over doors being locked or knowing mentaly where the civilians are located. and when politics rides over safety (not being economically wise to put in sprinklers) someone is bound to get hurt or worse. there was a lot of misunderstanding and wrong information given to the CFD. And when the correct information was given or found they acted fast. I know I don't have all the info, and it's been awhile, and i don't have first hand experience, but this is my personal opinion.

Sounds like CFD did a hell of a job. Sounds like alot of people could have died and didnt because of just down right good firefighting. It sounds like a lot of things have changed since last year. I read something about like 75 firefighters there were members of a Rapid Ascent Team.

Interesting. I would be curious to see how they stakced up the task forces. I understand Naperville went in with a truck, and Aurora was due next. But I have information that they deliberately hopsccothed around to keep from depleting any one division. Kinda what MABAS is all about, eh?

I also have information this weekend, from a highly reliable source, that Stedman is primarily responsible for the new high-rise SOPs. As well as things seem to have gone, that wouldn't surprise me a bit. That dude is a god.

In any case, they seemed to be much better prepared for this high rise fire.
Like I said; everyone from the Trib to Mayor Daley are hailing this as a defining moment for the Chicago Fire Department.
Jay; which Stedman are we talking about?

I hope you're not talking about Chief Jim Stedman...he's a good fireman, and he probably had input into the new procedures, but by no means did he solely write the new SOP, nor is he a god on the CFD...and the MABAS response wasn't anything defined--it was a matter of who could send companies without straining their own resources--it wasn't any one division responsible. And in some cases(like my home guard,) it was nice to have some capable firemen parked in the house for once.

From my area, Round Lake sent a truck, and I think it was Mt. Prospect and Arlington Heights each sent an engine, but I am not sure on those.

There were several Divisions sent. I know that 3,10,16,21 and 22 sent equipment. I forget who else. One thing to remember if you're coming in from the suburbs. You need to have adapters for your hose thread. Chicago has "Chicago Thread" while the suburbs generally use National Standard.

Mikey, does most depts have the adapters now to hook to their threads? I remember some discussion at a MABAS exec meeting awhile back about buying several thousand dollars of adapters for several divisions to adapt to "chicago" thread and for Chicago to be able to hook into the NST out in the burbs. Don't know if this ever happened but sounds like it should

I have heard rumors that each division has or will have a set of adapters. We have departments in our Division that border the city so they already have them.

That's pretty interesting Mikey. But it makes good sense.
It could easily be one of those details that get overlooked until it's too late.
Everyone with the same couplings or adapters and all on the same radio frequency makes for a better MABAS response.
