Can someone please help me recall/locate a story about a junior firefighter fataliy where the LODD benefits were denied by the supreme court because it was determined that he wasnt "technically" a full member of the dept. because he hadnt had the training and was a junior member, I think he got hit by a car while riding his bike to the station. Im preparing to open a can of worms in my dept. with regard to our juniors/probies and would like the details of the story, cause I think, generally speaking, the buck stops with the super court rulings. Thanks

Do a Firehouse Forums search for the name Chris Kangas.
You can also direct questions via e-mail, to The Officers and Members of the Brookhaven Fire Company.
The address is station52@brookhavenfd.org
You are correct. Chris was killed while riding his bicycle to the station, for an alarm. He was denied benefits by the National Fire Administration Board of Directors.
Rest in Peace Chris....

NJFF - good link - VERY good story.
For anyone else who happens through here - as far as I can tell from searching their web site, Chris still has not been recognized by The U.S. Department of Justice / The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
It's time to step up to the plate brothers. Contact YOUR local Congressional Representatives, the USDOJ, and the NFFF directly and voice your displeasure at this.

Let these folks know that ALL of Chris' Brothers want him recognized.Take Care - Stay Safe - God Bless
