Springfield firefighters file complaint over new benefit procedure
SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Springfield firefighters are upset with a new
procedure for filing on-duty injury claims.
Union leaders say that as of yesterday, the fire chief will have
sole authority to accept or deny injury-related benefits for
fighters. They're complaining that the chief will be advised by
Meditrol, a company hired by the city to manage claims made by
firefighters and police officers.
Under the old system, firefighters who had their paid injury
leave denied could appeal the decision. The firefighter's union is
opposed to the new procedure, and has filed an unfair labor
practice complaint against the city.
