*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Wednesday, December 01, 2004 at 0208 Hours (2:08AM PST), ten Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, two EMS Battalion Captains and two Chief Officer Command Teams under the direction of 2nd Battalion Commander Jay Turner responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 1612 West Sunny Heights Drive in Mount Washington. With reports of a woman trapped upstairs by a swift-moving blaze, Firefighters arrived quickly to discover heavy fire showing from a two-story hillside home with confirmation that the 60 year-old woman suffering serious burn injuries and smoke inhalation had leapt from a second floor window prior to their arrival, an awning breaking her fall. Firefighters also encountered the woman’s 73 year-old husband and 37 year-old son outside the burning home, the older man in critical condition with 2nd and 3rd degree burns to more than a third of his body, and the younger man in fair condition with minor burns to his hands and feet. Both men however, suffered from smoke inhalation commensurate to their burns. Firefighters using handlines mounted a bold and decisive attack within the 2,200 square-foot residence, and with the aid of precise vertical ventilation by their roof-top colleagues, were able to confine the fire to the wood-frame and stucco structure, extinguishing the flames in just 33 minutes. There were no Firefighter injuries. The 38 year-old home, heavily damaged by the blaze, had no Smoke Alarms. Loss from the fire is still being tabulated. The cause of this early morning fire remains under active investigation.

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,

AUSTRALIA

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), National Parks and Wildlife Service, State Forests and NSW Fire Brigades crews will continue to work on a number of fires around the state overnight, with firefighters focusing their efforts on fires near Parkes and Nambucca Heads.

Over 500 personnel are currently working on more than 23 fires across the state, that have been fanned by strong winds and extreme temperatures.

The fire at Parkes, north of Alectown, has burnt out around 1500 hectares and is being pushed by strong winds towards Alectown. Residents have been advised about how to prepare for the impact of the fire and extra resources are en route to protect properties in the area.

Firefighters will be working hard to stop the fire from spreading into Goobang National Park overnight and aircraft will be available at first light tomorrow if required.

A fire burning just west of Stuarts Point has closed the Pacific Highway between Macksville and Kempsey and will be re-opened once the fire has passed. The fire has burnt out over 50 hectares of Tamban State Forest and more RFS resources are en route.

No Total Fire Bans are in place for NSW tomorrow.
