LOS ANGELES, CA:
MULTI-PATIENT TRAFFIC COLLISION WITH ENTRAPMENT:

On Thursday, December 02, 2004 at 0952 Hours (9:52 AM PST), three Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, nine LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one Heavy Rescue and two USAR Units, as well as two EMS Battalion Captains and one Chief Officer Command Team under the direction of Assistant Chief Douglas Barry responded to a Multi-Patient Traffic Collision with Entrapment at 6221 West 96th Street near Los Angeles International Airport. The first Company to arrive on the 96th Street Bridge discovered what witnesses describe as a head-on collision between a full-sized Passenger Van and a Shuttle Bus operated by Los Angeles World Airports. The 49 year-old male driver (and sole occupant) of the passenger van was severely trapped within the wreckage of his vehicle before been freed by Firefighters using hydraulic rescue tools. He died shortly after arrival at Daniel Freeman Centinela Hospital. Firefighters triaged a total of twenty-two other patients from the Airport Shuttle Bus, twenty-one of whom were later treated and transported to area clinics and hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. One person declined treatment or transportation against medical advice. Los Angeles Police Department officials are handling the investigation.
