I'm sitting at my office with the scanner on in the background listening to a job (i believe in Brooklyn). They assigned Ladder 170 but asked them to return to quarters for their second piece?
What's the deal with that? Do they also house a specialty rig in their quarters?

Many FDNY companies have specialty training and additional apparatus for certain calls, ie. collapse rigs, Haz Mat, SOC support, Foam, Purple K (in my case) to name a few. I'm not sure what 170 runs with.

Eng. 257, Lad. 170, and Bat. 58, are all located at 1361 Rockaway Pkwy
If my basic HazMat training has taught me nothing else, it's that if you see a glowing green monkey running away from something, follow that monkey!

Took a peek over at FDNYTrucks.com...
Looks like the 'other unit' was a Highway Response Unit..Maybe someone has the 411 on this thing?

42VT - I would have to agree on the Highway response unit since everything else housed there according to the site you gave is labeled differently (E257, B58) and the Highway Response unit is also numbered 170.
Question now becomes what exactly does a highway response unit entail and what are the criteria for its dispatch.
