*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Thursday, December 16, 2004, at 1905 hours (7:05 p.m.) five companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Battalion Command Officer Team, two Battalion EMS Supervisors, and two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, under the direction of Battalion Commander Ralph Terrazas, responded to a Structure Fire at 2523 E. Fairmount Street, in the Boyle Heights area. First units on the scene reported a one-story duplex (a single family dwelling configured into a complex duplex) well involved with fire. Entering the structure with handlines and deep into the structure, Firefighters encountered an intense volume of heat and fire in front and above them. Withdrawing from an interior fire attack, firefighters took up a defensive position on the exterior of the duplex knocking down the bulk of the fire and then re-entering the structure to complete the extinguishment of the fire in twenty-eight minutes. The structure sustained a partial roof collapse. Three residents were home at the time of the fire all escaped without injury prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. As a result of the intense heat and fire, two Firefighters suffered first-degree burns to their ears and were transported to Sherman Oaks Burn Center in good condition. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is listed as an electrical short in a lamp. Fire damage is estimated at $225,000 ($150,000 structure and $75,000 contents).

LOS ANGELES, CA:
FIRE WITH CIVILIAN FATALITY:

On Saturday, December 18, 2004 at 1049 Hours (10:49 AM PST), three Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances and one EMS Battalion Captain, as well as a cadre of LAFD Fire Cause Investigators, all under the direction of 3rd Battalion Commander Michael Arguelles responded to a Fire With Civilian Fatality on 67th Street beneath the Harbor Freeway in South Los Angeles. Firefighters and Paramedics arrived quickly at the freeway underpass to discover and fully extinguish the smoldering remains of an unidentified adult male who according to witnesses, had set himself ablaze. Despite the efforts of a passerby who ran more than two blocks to summon the Fire Department and return with a pot of water, the man was sadly beyond help and pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no other injuries, or damage to public or private property. The Office of the Los Angeles County Coroner will seek to positively identity the deceased, as well as determine the exact cause and manner of his death. Los Angeles Police Department officials also remain part of what LAFD Investigators describe as an active investigation.
