I've heard that Nashville FPD (IL) had a fatality in a house fire last night. I haven't officially confirmed that but will post any new information I come with as soon as I can. It was actually in our auto-aid area with them but dispatch sent a different dept. Our dispatch needs to shape up. Just last night and early this morning I heard at least 3 mistakes they made. That's a different ongoing story, though.
Chad, you heard anything?

Jack, I heard the call. I understood that there was someone trapped but that's all I've heard. Nothing on the Salem radio website about it and nothing in today's Sentinel so I'm not sure either.

Told my wife I'm at work. Told my boss I'm sick. I'm really at the fire station.

There was indeed a fatality in the fire. NFPD is supposed to release more information this afternoon.

I only have three things to say.
1. that sucks that they lost someone.

Jack:
Sorry to hear about the fatality in Nashville.
Keep us posted as to cause/origin.
If your dispatch is as screwed up as you describe, I would request a meeting with the 911 coordinator.
I believe that fixing it is a win-win.

I should have posted this earlier today. FM investigator says it started in a faulty electric blanket. Victim died from smoke inhalation and burns.
CR, I'm on the 911 board and the PSAP committee of the board. It's a situation where 911 doesn't have the clout to fix it. The sheriff pays the dispatchers and he's the boss over them. We make a lot of suggestions and file complaints when these things happen, but it probably doesn't get much further. We have 7 dispatchers, 2 of them have 25+ yrs. each and the other 5 have 4 years between them. So, the 25 yr. ones are teaching the new ones but they do what they've always done, even before 911 and ambulance and FD dispatching. It's a sad situation that will get fixed, but it'll take some time. We ARE working on it.Jack Boczek, Chief
