    Default maltese cross

Trying to solve an argument in the fire station.
On the Maltese cross the tools have an object that has a pole like a pike pole but but has a U looking bracket with a swivel ball or cup mounted on it. We say it was an old extinguisher or candle snuffer. In other words we don't know.
    WOW did I say that
    Any help would be appreciated

I wouldn't doubt it was a candle snuffer. Street lights used to be candles or oil lamps in some areas, so someone had to light them at dusk and then put them out at dawn. A fire is a fire so maybe that morning job was left to the firefighters.

If you could post a picture it might help.

Could it represent a lantern used by fire wardens in the good ole days?

It could be both due to different tools found on different crosses
One of the fire Buffs around here just stated that the fire warden also carried a pole with a wick that put out shingle fires during the night

The stuff in the middle of the cross is called the "scramble". I don't know why or when or where it came from but if you ever order a uniform badge most companies call it that. I would imagine that the tools in each scramble just represent the person that designed it.
