Feline mass casualty? On the plus side, they did make a rescue of the human inhabitant...is kind of amazing a mattress fire made enough smoke to do this (especially since I'd reckon cats stay low to the floor naturally!)
Firefighters find 27 cats killed during Athol blaze
ATHOL— Twenty-seven cats died in a fire Friday afternoon in a home at 145 Crescent St.
Athol firefighters said they were summoned to the home at 5:13 p.m. Friday, and found the single-story dwelling with smoke coming from the eves. A person was trapped in the cellar behind a garage door that would not open. Firefighters forced the garage door open and freed the person, who suffered minor injuries.
A mattress fire was extinguished. No other information was available.
The firefighters also battled an early morning fire at 162 Main St., a two-story eight-unit apartment building. All of the occupants made it out safely. At 10:10 a.m., an hour after firefighters last checked the building, the structure started to burn again, with the heaviest fire in the attic.
Mutual aid was called in from the Orange and Phillipston Fire departments. The Petersham Fire Department provided cover duty for the town. There was heavy fire and smoke and water damage to the structure, officials said, as much as from as the original fire.
