    Default A question..

At my house the grill seems to catch fire quite frequently. This usually happens because when my parents put something on there with olive oil it drips down and flares up, or because the stuff in the grill and the grease trap catches on fire and creates this giant fireball.

Anywho, whenever this happens I walk out with an extingusher, and put it out. My main concern are the flames lapping up against the propane tank. Should I bother putting on my gear, (never have) or is there anything else I should do when this happens?

Sound like you need to put down the can and go get a new grill.

I dang sure don't want to taste what comes off that grill the NEXT time something is cooked on it after the "extinguisher" incident ;p

How much gunk is built up down there? Tried cleaning it?

Or like Chief Reason said, switch to charcoal.

I sometimes keep a small squirt bottle (the little cheapo ones you can get at the dollar store or Wal Mart), so you can give the flames a little spritz to keep the flames down.

My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

First you'll need to install an industrial kitchen style vent hood outside over the grill. Next, plumb it with a suppression system (screw purple K, better go for the class K wet chem). Don't skimp on it now, be sure when it activates it will shut off the gas, set off the audio and visual alarms installed in your house, dials a dedicated phone line with a direct link to the FD dispatch (with a radio back-up of course), automatically starts the whackermobile, flips on the woo-woos so you can get to the station faster...

    …and then for a back-up, why don’t you get a portable foam cart…

Seriously, if it’s flaming up that bad something’s wrong. Have the gas jets rusted through? Any cracks in the hose? Go ahead and give it a good cleaning. Don’t waste an extinguisher on the grill. A box of baking soda will work just fine. It’s a lot cheaper too.

a couple of ideas for the rocket signtist

    1. Clean the damn grill and grease trap.

    2. Move the propane tank.

    3. Run, not walk down the road.

    4. Find new parents.

    Default Just wondering

If this young gentleman is in any way an example of what you are getting inducted as future firefighters--I feel sorry for you all.
If this is the case, I can see why your death rate amongst fire crews is so high.

But then is it him, or his family environment?
