Thieves Target Jackson Firefighters

Some Jackson firefighters are heated over a number of car burglaries at their firehouses. The latest victims are the firemen at station number 14 on Lynch Street. Their cars were hit overnight. Thieves caused hundreds of dollars in damage.

Firefighters at station number 14 say they were awakened around 2:00 a.m. by the sound of breaking glass. They ran outside to catch the thieves, but were too late. At least four cars were hit, windows broken, and anything that was valuable inside is now gone. The thieves came in through a wooden fence and left the same way. Across town the zoo crew was hit earlier in the week. Broken glass from windows of at least three cars broken into still remains.

ST. LOUIS, MO:
Public Access Defibrillation Program from PIO, STLFD

St. Louis Fire Department
1421 N. Jefferson
St. Louis, MO 63106
For More Information Contact:
Kim Bacon at 314-289-1937, pager 990-1906

Who: Fire Chief Sherman George and St. Louis Fire Department members

Representatives from the American Heart Association
Representatives from Cardiac Science
Representatives from the St. Louis Fire Department Lifesaving Foundation

What: Public Access Defibrillation Program- training- Speakers began at 8 AM/training, photo opportunities and interviews to followed

When: Thursday, January 20, 2005 0800 - 1000

Where: St. Louis Fire Department Headquarters, 1421 N. Jefferson, Auditorium

Fire Chief Sherman George received his updated training and practice opportunity in the resuscitation of cardiac arrest victims on Thursday. This training was completed by all members of the St. Louis Fire Department as the next leg of a citywide Public Access Defibrillation program, aimed at dramatically improving the survival rates for those who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest in the City of St. Louis. This program was piloted in July of 2003 by placing defibrillators and trained personnel in several public buildings and parks within the City of St. Louis. The pilot program showed promise and paved the way for the St. Louis Fire Department to proceed with the program.

About 340,000 Americans die each year from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. In fact, a person's chance of survival is reduced by about 10 percent for every minute spent waiting for a potentially life-saving defibrillation shock. Implementation of a successful public access defibrillation program has achieved survival rates as high as 74 percent if patients received defibrillation within 3 minutes. The American Heart Association estimates that as many as 50,000 of these lives can be saved if an automated external defibrillator is available at the time of the emergency, and someone is nearby who has been trained to use it.

The goal is to deploy hundreds of AEDs in public facilities, highly trafficked public places and businesses throughout the city within the next few years. The St. Louis Fire Department, in a collaborate effort
with the St. Louis Fire Department Lifesaving Foundation and the American Heart Association, will be training hundreds of community residents to use the devices.

This program has been made possible by a $986,861 grant from the Missouri foundation for Health.
