what other jobs are there besides in the fire service

Im 20, in the midst of getting in shape to become a wildland firefighter, i have a back problem that may stop me from being a "firefighter". Im going to college taking the basic firetech classes and might go for a degree or something. What other careers are there besides the fire service?

Fire alarm instalation and design. Fire supression systems tech. Dispatcher. Prevention and education... Call Worchester Polytech in Mass or Oklahoma State, home of ISFTA. There's a million things to do.

I have been a 911 dispatcher for 6 1/2 yrs. My background at first leaned toward police - due to family members in law enforcement. As time has gone on, I truly enjoy dispatching fires and EMS. When we were in the middle of the 2003 fire season, I worked our county's only 6 alarm grass fire... oh the adrenaline! The county fire chief and I worked well together, and managed to cram a 2nd alarm wildfire into that same afternoon.

I have a new-found respect for my firefighters and EMS. Due to our center being small, I'm able to get to know the crews fairly well... or at least how they operate.

Any how... should your back not allow you to work the lines... dispatching is fun too! Good luck!

There are a lot of other jobs than being a Firefighter.

You could be a communications officer, plans reviewer, alarm tech., sprinkler tech., secretary, burger filpper, bus driver, toll collecter, ticket taker at a ball park, etc.
