DAYTON, Ohio -- Four Dayton police officers rushed into a burning building to save a woman and two small children after a fire broke out at the Cornell Woods Apartment complex.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the woman sticking her head out a third-floor window, yelling for help. Officers said smoke was swirling around the woman and the 1- and 2-year-old children she was babysitting for.

The officers decided to go into the burning building to try and rescue the woman and the children. The officers found them and then formed a human chain to guide them down and safely out of the building.

Paramedics took the small children to Children’s Medical Center for a brief time for observation. Authorities wanted the doctors to check them for smoke inhalation.

The woman who was in the building did not suffer any injuries nor did the four officers who went into the building to save the woman and the children.

Fire officials said a grease fire caused by a cooking accident in a second-floor apartment caused the thick smoke.
