For the second day in a row, a sea of blue-clad firefighters lined up in piercing cold for the funeral of a Brother who had died in the line of duty. Firefighter Richard Sclafani, 37, of Bayside, was praised for his physical strength and courage -- and the soft core that melted when he was around his Boston terrier puppy, Mugsy.
Lt. Louis Rufrano of Engine Co. 290 said he heard two years worth of stories as he prepared his 10 minutes of remarks for the funeral of Sclafani, who was assigned to Ladder Co. 103 in the same firehouse on Sheffield Avenue in Brooklyn. There were stories about a big tough firefighter, about all-night poker games, chewing tobacco and spittoons, "and how a tough guy became a teddy bear when he saw his dog," Rufrano said.
Sclafani died fighting a fire in a private home in Brooklyn, just hours after two firefighters were fatally injured in the Bronx when a fireball forced them out a fourth-floor window and they plunged to the ground.Four other firefighters forced out of the window were badly injured.
"He was a go-to guy," said Lt. Mike McVey, his supervisor at Ladder 103.The 10-year veteran was among the first on the scene of a fire inside a two-story Brooklyn house. While searching for trapped occupants, he became separated from the others. He was discovered a few minutes later on the cellar staircase, unconscious and in respiratory arrest. He died later at a Brooklyn hospital.ALL GAVE SOME BUT SOME GAVE ALL

January 29, 2005 -- The New York Post has launched a special Uniformed Firefighters Association fund to help the families of three city firefighters killed and four critically injured in the line of duty. The firefighters died Sunday in two separate blazes, in The Bronx and Brooklyn. The Post has donated $25,000 to the UFA and is encouraging all New Yorkers to contribute. The UFA will manage all facets of the fund. All of the money raised will go to the firefighters' families.
If you want to help, send a check to the
