Two woman remain hospitalized after being pulled from the murky dark depths of a Miramar lake.

Miramar Fire Rescue arrived at the Silver Shores subdivision at about 3:37 a.m. Thursday after receiving reports that a Honda SUV had plunged into a lake. According to Fire Rescue spokesman Romeo Lavarias, the women, ages 59 and 62, stopped at the security gate of the subdivision and told the guard they were going to pick someone up for church services.

The driver of the SUV handed the security guard her driver's license and when the guard turned to call the home, the driver accelerated and made a sharp right hand turn. The car tore through the bushes, knocked down a ''No Swimming in the Lake'' sign and plunged into the lake.

Three dive teams responded and eight divers scoured the lake. They located the women - one was strapped into her seat, the other was not - and pulled them to the surface. The windows of the SUV were rolled down, Lavarias said.

The women, who were on their way to 5 a.m. services at a mosque, were taken to Memorial West and are reported to have strong pulses, Lavarias said.
