SANTA CLARA Co., CA:
FIRE FIGHTER FATALITY

PRESS RELEASE
2/13/05

At 2:20 am our Dispatch Center received a report of a structure fire at 15700 Blossom Hill Rd @ LuRay The first engine arrived and reported flames coming through the roof of the residence.
A total of four alarms were requested and approximately 25 pieces of fire apparatus responded to assist. During the course of fighting the fire, at approximately 3:25 am, Fire Captain Mark McCormack came in contact with an energized electrical wire. Treatment began at the scene and an ambulance responded and transported him to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:15 a.m.
There were six people at home when the fire broke out. All escaped without injuries and the American Red Cross is on scene assisting them. This is the first line of duty death in the 58 year history of the Santa Clara County Fire Dept.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Captain McCormack’s family, friends and fellow firefighters who share this loss. Santa Clara County Fire, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and the Dept. of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are following routine investigative procedures to determine the exact cause of the fire and fatality. Captain McCormack came to the Department in June 1999 and was promoted to Captain in December 2004. He was 36 years old.

Fire Department administration is working with the family and will provide additional information as it becomes available.

IRAQ
Firefighter dies during rescue attempt in Iraq

DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN)
-- A firefighter from here was killed Feb. 13 while on a rescue mission in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Ray Rangel, 29, died while attempting to rescue two Soldiers trapped in a Humvee that overturned in a canal. He was deployed to an Air Force unit operating out of Balad Air Base, Iraq.

He was permanently assigned to the 7th Civil Engineer Squadron and was a native of San Antonio. He arrived here in September 2002 and had been on active duty since September 1994.

"All of Team Dyess" mourns the loss of one of our own. Sergeant Rangel died courageously attempting to rescue others. While we grieve for him and his family, we are at the same time filled with pride and gratitude for his heroism. He will be missed, but others will honor his sacrifice by carrying on the fight with the same courage he displayed," said Col. Garrett Harencak, 7th Bomb Wing commander.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTRUE FIRE:

On Sunday, February 13, 2005, at 2315 hours (11:15 p.m. P.S.T.), twenty seven companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Deputy Chief, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, six Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, two Battalion EMS Captains, four LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one Hazardous Materials Squad, and other fire department resources, under the direction of Assistant Chief John Badgett responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 1821 W. 60th Street in the Hyde Park area. First fire companies to arrive on the scene reported a one-story, 50’ x 150’ commercial structure well involved with fire. Confronted with a structure that was completely involved with fire, Firefighters immediately took up a defensive position on the exterior of the building using heavy stream appliances and handlines to aggressively attack the fire in the “vacant” building. The fire was confined to the “vacant” structure and extinguished in approximately one-hour and nineteen-minutes. A portion of the roof and a wall collapsed. During the search and rescue phase of the incident, the body of an adult was found inside the structure and declared dead at the scene. The cause of the fire is listed as under investigation and fire damage is still being tabulated.

Miami Valley Breaking News sends out incident notifications of all types of fires, multiple alarm fire, hazardous materials incidents, several different types of EMS incidents, including MVC's with entrapment, MCI's, shootings and stabbings. We have also just begun sending law enforcement incidents, like pursuits, armed robbery and SWAT call-out, to name a few. Our software allows us to send directly to Nextel, Arch Wireless and Ameritech, and to all other wireless devices as an email.

MVBN sends incidents notifications on a county-by-county basis. We have three different groups for each county, which are, fire, EMS and law enforcement, and we also send daytime (7am - 10pm) and nighttime (10pm - 7am) notifications, which allows our members to use a work pager/cell phone to receive information from us, without being disturbed at night.

Our current coverage area includes the following counties in Ohio and northern Kentucky: - Boone (KY), Butler, Campbell (KY), Champaign, Clark, Columbiana, Darke, Delaware, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Kenton (KY), Logan, Madison, Mahoning, Miami, Montgomery, Portage, Preble, Trumbull, Union, and Warren. For the counties not listed, we have an "other" group. We also send out Amber Alerts and incoming National incident notifications from other groups around the country.
