I ask this question of all those who have ever attended little league baseball games, where there are several fields within close proximity.
Why , do people duck their heads when someone shouts "HEADS UP ! ",
and others look up into the sky when someone shouts " DUCK !" ?
Just curious.

Human nature!
"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

A research done in 1967 by the law firm of Butter, Ball and Wadd determined that the hunter instinct is still present in everyone. Thus when someone says "Duck", they think duck flying over head, dinner time. Of course I'm making this all up while I'm at work so who actually knows. I do like Gonzo's answer as well.

When you throw a ball or something at a man while he is seated, he will close his legs and catch what ever is thrown torward him. If it is a woman sitting there and the same thing it thrown to her, the female opens her legs!!!
