JERSEY CITY, NJ:
2/19/05 0731 3-3 773

Saturday of the Presidents' Day Weekend dawned bright and sunny in Jersey City, but bitter cold. Temperatures hovered around 18 degrees as Group D completed their 24 hours of duty. For 23 and one half hours, the tour was the routine mix of cooking fires, boiler malfunctions, alarm activations and medical assist runs. That came to a blazing halt at 0731 hours when Box 773 was struck. Numerous calls were received for a building fire at 156 Lexington Ave.

This block is a firefighting nightmare; a narrow street, a myriad of overhead wires and several row frame dwellings packed on both sides of the street. The last run on this block, on November 27, 2004, a small rubbish fire in a home's basement, turned into a six hour ordeal when a water main broke and a portion of the street collapsed, sinking Ladder 11's rear wheels into a ten foot deep hole!

A column of black smoke was high in the cloudless sky as companies turned out. Eng. Co. 17 threaded their way down the tight block and reported "a two story frame, heavy fire on the first floor". Capt. Charles Lind of Eng. Co. 17 ordered a 2nd Alarm as soon as the rig came to halt. Squad Co. 4 backed up from Mallory Ave. to supply Eng. Co. 17 and encountered a car parked squarely in front of the nearest hydrant. Two 3 " lines were run to the hydrant around the car and a supply line was stretched.

The fire building was the fourth home in a row of six attached dwellings, all measuring 20' x 40' with small one story rear extensions. First due engine companies knocked down the heavy fire and started an advance into the interior. Ladders 11 and 12 raised ground ladders to reach the roof of the fire building and the exposures. Big holes had to be cut quickly if the row was to be saved. 2nd Alarm companies stretched lines into the exposures, with Eng. Co. 15 and Ladder Co. 9 taking the rear through back yards of homes on Roosevelt Ave. to the north.

As the roofs were opened and ceilings pulled, it became apparent that the fire had extended to both exposures and was racing through the cocklofts east towards West Side Ave. Division 1, Deputy Chief William Sinnott, transmitted a 3rd Alarm and assigned the manpower from those units to cover the exposure buildings as well.

A total of seven handlines were operated with the fire held to the original building, #156 and three exposures, #156A, #154 and #152A. All four buildings sustained significant damage. #152 and #158 suffered heavy smoke and water damage. Fire was declared under control at 0856 hours. Only one member was injured, Capt. Lind, who was knocked to the floor in Exposure 4 when a portion of the ceiling collapsed on him. He was treated and released from the Jersey City Medical Center.

Car 26 responded on the 2nd Alarm with Deputy Chief Bob Scollan as chauffeur and operated for 5 hours, providing hot drinks to frozen fire fighters from both Groups D and A.

Response as follows:

0731 Box 773 Eng. Co. 17-4-8-9 Lad. Co. 11-12 Res. Co. 1 Batt. 4
0735 WF 773 Eng. Co. 10, Twr. Lad. 4, Div. 1, Batt. 2, MSU Car 20-30
0735 2-2 773 Eng. Co. 15-19-22 Lad. Co. 9 Car 3-26-28
0746 3-3 773 Eng. Co. 13-2 Lad. Co. 7 Car 14

The North Hudson MSU was special called as the Jersey City MSU has mechanical difficulties in filling bottles. Ironically Eng. Co. 17 had been out of service for mechanical problems for 6 weeks and had just received their 1998 E-One pump back on Wednesday, February 18.

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Saturday, February 19, 2005 at 0128 Hours (1:28 AM PST), 12 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, EMS Captain Steven Lilienthal, and one Hazardous Materials Squad under the direction of Assistant Chief Tony Varela responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 6401 North Platt Avenue in the Woodland Hills area. Firefighters arrived quickly to find a one-story strip mall with fire showing from a large facade. Firefighters battled the blaze, utilizing hose lines and mounting aggressive roof-cutting operations, and were able to confine the fire to the large attic area while maintaining salvage on the first floor. It took 70 men and women of the LAFD just 42 minutes to suppress this arduous blaze. There were no injuries. Loss from the fire is being tabulated and the cause is currently under investigation.
