Hello all -
I've got a question. I'm entering the FDNY academy in a few weeks, and I'm wondering...once we finish training, do probies generally bounce from house to house their first year in order to gain experience fighting fires in different types of buildings? From what I've heard, we don't get settled into our permanent house until after a year the job.
-any help would be great.

I would think you will find that to be the case with most large departments.
Good luck

From what I have read about FDNY, they classify their companies as slow, average, or busy. You are assigned out of class and serve one year on your company, whatever the class. Then the second year you ride a year in a company of a differn't class, and finally your third year on another company on the final class. After serving on a company in each class, you report back to your originally assigned company.
Bunch of FDNY guys on here can verify. This should help you out till you here from them.Robert Kramer

Management is making sure things are done right. Leadership is doing the right thing. The fire service needs alot more leaders and a lot less managers.
"Everyone goes home" is the mantra for the pussification of the modern, American fire service.
Comments made are my own. They do not represent the official position or opinion of the Fire Department or the City for which I am employed. In fact, they are normally exactly the opposite.

I agree with everybody in saying that you will probably be on the detail trail for at least a year. Good Luck with the academy! I heard the FDNY's academy was really hard but they produce some very good firefighters.

1st things first...
proby2be,
Lets focus on whats important...you haven't had your first day. Don't worry about what you will do once you get out...there is no gaurantee you will even make it through. I suggest you refocus yourself and try to keep a low profile...I assure you if you ask that question while in PFS you will get abused to no end. That I CAN gaurantee.
Keep your mouth shut and ears open. No one is there to hurt you, do as you are told and you will have no problems. They will tell you everything you are going to do and how to do it. I strongly suggest you don't ask any buffy questions and if you are a volly I extreemely suggest you act ignorant and not let on that you know anything...period! (The instructors will figure it out anyhow) By the end of 3 months you will be so exhausted and worn out that you will probably not care where you go so long as it isn't anywhere near Randals Island!
As for your question: As of right now the rotation program(as described by MemphisE34a) is on hold as it has been since 9-11. there was talk of them bringing it back and they can do so at any time they please. If things go as they have been (nothing gaurantees that, as it can and has changed overnight before) you will be assigned to an Engine or Ladder Company and there you will be for some time. Basicly until you promote or you decide to file for a transfer.
Wherever you get assigned...regarless if it is the bussiest Engine in the Bronx, a Midtown Ladder or a Tower Ladder in Queens...you make it what it is...learn all you can about your company and the buildings in that area. Strive to be the best...even if you don't go to fires everyday you still should be the expert with your company, house, battalion & response area. Take pride in it. Get involved in the job and the 20 years will go faster than you think.
Best of Luck.

PS-I wouldn't be posting any info on here or any other site that might identify yourself...you never know who is watching.
PPS- I hope you've been running!Last edited by FFFRED; 02-23-2005 at 04:11 PM.

thnx for the help guys-
I really appreciate the amount of info and help that's passed on in this forum.
FFFRED-
Thanx a ton for the detailed info; it helped to clear a lot of things. I can assure you, I am focusing on what's important. I just happened to have a conversation a few days before about rotations, which made me curious. I am fully focused, and fully in tune with the whole "mouth shut, ears open" mentality. I just figured it would be okay to ask here on the general forums.
Above all else, I know that there's no guarantee I'll make it through, but I can honestly say, my heart is in it, and to me, that's a good start.

Do the best you can every day of the academy and remind yourself everyday of how lucky you are just to be in new yorks academy.

FFFred has given you enough. Know this, you can be drummed out after two days. 1.5 mile run and you must make the number or you're gone, finished, adios!
I suggest you get off the computer and go for a long run, stop when they call you to report!
As for what's in store for the first year, I'd worry about tomorrow and nothing past that
