NFA course vacancies announced

For those of you who have not attended the National Fire Academy, I strongly suggest that you apply for an on-campus course. It is well worth the time and the price is right (paid for by the Feds, except for meals).

There are no good reasons for the fire service to allow any course vacancies in any class, but here they are:

Not for nuthin', but when DHS looks at the NFA and starts to cut, it will be hard to bitch that the place is so important when there are tons of vacancies every semester. They pay,basically for everything except your meals. And the meal ticket is dirt cheap for what you get.

AMEN!

I just recieved a email from the Chairman of the National Fire Academy Alumni Association regarding these vacancies. I"ll ask on his behalf, as well as mine, please get the word out to anyone who may have an interest in these courses. George is correct, we ask for courses, then don't bother to attend them, so any proposed cuts should not be a suprise to anyone.

Question is, who can take them?

I'm aware of atleast one of two cadets that are interested, if there are vacancies, can they attend?

Res343cue, I would be surprised if cadets would be considered for admission.

Most courses have some prerequisites because the NFA wants to deliver the training to the people who need it most.

As a rule, members of paid departments are not eligible for Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP) classes; you have to have a primary job responsibility for arson detection in order to take the arson courses (except arson detection for the company officer); you have to be involved in code enforcement in order to enroll in the inspection curriculum, etc.

I don't know if they relax these requirements when you apply to fill vacancies. But there is probably something for everyone (prevention, for example), even if it doesn't seem to have the "cool" factor of the arson courses.

Just go to the web site for more information - there are even some online self-study courses. You have nothing to lose by applying.

I noticed the prevention / public education listings in there...Good jobs for the cadets to be involved in.

Should look into it some more. :cool:

Look interesting.

Might not be accurate. One of the last classes that I taught on campus had two fire fighters from Montreal in it. Call and check it out.
