    Default Collapsible steering column

    Hello everybody!

Can anyone explain how the collapsible steering column in the Volvo S40 (Volvo ERG, Page 36) works? I've some problems to understand the text and the function.

It sounds like the pyrotechnic charge deploys and allows the column to collapse in towards the dashboard to allow for easier acces/extricaiton o the casualty. Not certain, but that's how I interpret it....

    Default Research

    Hello!

I did some research and found a picture (courtsey of Volvo) showing the steering column. I didn't find out how it did work exactly. When will the column colapse, in every severe crash or when there is force on the steering column (passenger 'diving' into the airbag)?

If you have a Volvo dealership near-by, stop in and talk to a sales rep or some in the maintenance department. They might have more information on it. Better yet, bring the entire company.

Hello Safety33, my problem is that there is a statement in the ERG indicating that these type of steering column is only used in the US-Version (USA/CDN). I can imagine that the german volvo dealer is not familiar with this type and travaling to the USA is a little bit expensive .

Let me check around and see what I can find out for you. It might take me a week or two.

Ford is also showing that the 2005 Ford 500, Montego and Freestyle can have a Deployable Steering Column system (Part #3C529).

    Any questions, please call.
