    Default Wellness / Fitness Program

Has anyone with a mandatory fitness program (or one that has really good voluntary participation) run any stats looking at reduction in injuries or done a comparison of pre / post sick leave usage?

I would really aooreciate any information I could use to show human / fiscal savings from a program such as this.

    Thanks!

"Designing the Fitness Program" by John LeCuyer has a chart entitled Physical Fitness Injuries, Pre- and post-program on page 199. If you're thinking of starting aprogram, his book has some really good information regarding pilot studies and statistics. Pennwell is the publisher.

Default Injuries and the economic consequences

    Hello,
TriData Corporation just published a report on The Economic Consequences of Firefighter Injuries and Their Prevention for the National Institute of Standards and Technology. I have not finished reading it yet but I suspect it maybe just what you are looking for. I don't have a web site I could offer but hope that the info I supplied will help with your search.

I read some of that also. It looks like it has some good information. Here's a copy:

    Default Wellness/Fitness

Our department implemented a W/F program about 2 years ago. Our city spends about $4 million annually for employee healthcare. Where I work, the average city employee costs the city $680/month for family coverage, but the FD's average is $550. We have about 60% participation and we have the OK from our chief to work out first thing in the morning after our vehicles and equipment is ready to go. There hasn't been anyone injured while working out (knock on wood!). We just finished doing voluntary strength and cardio assessments which are non-punitive. All results are confidential. We have 3 peer fitness trainers certified through the IAFF. We received a Fire Act grant in 2003 to implement the W/F program which bought us cardio and weight equipment, full physicals for all members (stress testing, blood work (also for heavy metals possibly encountered on the job)). Hope some of this info helps. Good luck.

    Default More Info

Came across something else which might be of interest. Check out the www.strengthcats.com web site and open the fire-power page there is a report which Tacoma Fire did which may be helpful.
