*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Monday, March 07, 2005, at 1959 hours (7:59 p.m. P.S.T.), twelve companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, one Assistant Chief Officer Command Team, three Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, one EMS Battalion Supervisor, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one Arson unit, and other support personnel, under the direction of Assistant Chief Roxanne V. Bercik responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 127 East Waterview Street in the Westchester area. First units on the scene reported a large, Tri-level, single-family dwelling with heavy smoke showing. Firefighters with handlines aggressively entered the structure and immediately encountered heavy smoke throughout the home and were unable to immediately locate the source. Searching each level of the multi-level structure, the fire was finally located on the second level. On the second level, Firefighters were faced with limited access to the bedroom were the fire was located. Entering the door of the bedroom, Firefighters encountered extreme “pack rat” like conditions with combustibles stacked from floor to ceiling throughout the bedroom area with little or no space to maneuver to locate the seat of the fire and extinguish it. Working their way over, around, and digging through the heavy fire load, Firefighters located the seat of the fire and extinguished the fire in forty-six minutes. One female adult was home at the time of the fire and escaped without injury prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. During fire fighting operations, one Firefighter suffered an ankle injury and was treated on the scene and released for further evaluation. No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as under investigation. Fire damage is estimated at $300,000. ($100,000 contents and $200,000 structure)

LOS ANGELES, CA:
Marathon Wrap Up

Dear Friend of the LAFD:

This Sunday's Los Angeles Marathon XX was a very busy time for the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Long before the Bicycle Tour started at 5:50 AM, and even before the many Wheelchair Race participants lined up for their 7:50 AM dash, uniformed members of the LAFD were in place to support the nearly 50,000 who were expected to participate in the day's events.

Countless more of course, lined the 26.2 mile course, and all along the way - all throughout the day - the LAFD was there when needed. And needed we were.

Our Fire Department planning that began following last year's event clearly paid off, as our joint command with Police officials and coordination with other key agencies allowed us to use the "force multiplier" of efficiency.

From our six two-member LAFD Bicycle Medic Teams, to our many LAFD CERT volunteers, to the always helpful Ham Radio operators who are part of the LAFD Auxiliary Communications Service, there were multiple layers of support and safety in which to address the needs of the "city within a city" that the Marathon brings to Los Angeles.

http://www.lafd.org/cert.htm

http://www.lafd.org/acs.htm

Little did we imagine though, that our skills would be needed within moments of the race's start.

A 49 year-old Long Beach man who was running the Marathon collapsed in a witnessed cardiac arrest in the first mile. LAFD Paramedics sprinted to his side and following a full-round of Advanced Life Support measures, including three defibrillations, were able to restore a pulse and blood pressure.

The man was transported to California Hospital in critical condition. Last we heard though, he was in their ICU and his condition "looked promising". I know we harp a great deal on the role that early defibrillation plays in The Chain of Survival, but it was clearly evident there in front of thousands of bystanders, that seconds can save lives.

Though the LAFD has state-of-the-art 12-lead EKG/Defibrillators, we do want to remind you that a simple and easy to use Semi-Automatic Defibrillators can be a lifesaver. You can now obtain them easily for your home or place of work:

http://www.lafd.org/aed.htm

Whether at the gym, a house of worship or your favorite restaurant, we hope you'll spread the word about these safe, affordable and easy to use devices.

Overall, the men and women of the LAFD assisted hundreds of participants and spectators at Marathon XX, mostly with supportive care and words of encouragement while guiding and transporting them to the many "medical aid" stations along the route.

Though the medical aid stations were able to fully assist most of their patients, nearly two dozen persons required ambulance transportation from the scene to regional hospitals. The good news is that there was no loss of life or serious injuries reported.

In closing, we wanted to congratulate the many who participated in the City of Los Angeles Marathon XX. If you'd like to capture some of the excitement we witnessed, please feel free to visit the interactive content at:

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,

Brian Humphrey
