Default Favorite off-duty activity with the guys ...

Just curious .... what off-duty activity brings your department members or crew closer together?

Well since ladder 49 came out, we have a "Ladder 49 Night" where we all meet at the station,we'll have one of the guys pickup 2 pizzas or 3, we'll watch the movie on the TV. It's a fun thing and it works, it gets people out to come down and get out of the house for a bit. But we have BBQs in the spring and we recently had one for our new engine we got in August. We do basketball and football every now and then but usually we're on calls so we don't et alot of time to do the fun things anymore.

It seems that every get together around here is an excuse to get drunk.

What a waste of time sitting around stuff pizza in you face watching a hoky hollywood movie! We know what the job entails as we live it every day. Hollywood is just that hollywood! They have never or never will be able to make a movie that is real life of a FIREFIGHTER!

Normally when our crew is off, and the weather is good, we have cook outs, fix up each others houses, (painting - roofing - yard work) and we help each other move, take the kids for an outing, go camping, waterskiing or anything else that needs to be done. Sometimes we all baby sit some bodys kids as usual one of the Mother(s) is giving birth to another kid. We also sit at the hospitals when one of the brothers is injuried conforting the members family.

So, what I am saying Brothers and Sisters, normally we don't sit around stuffing pizza and watching movies. We are more productive.

Floor hockey in the bay or if its nice in our parking lot, volleyball, BBq's, you name it we do it. We had a bowling night(with excess consumption)that was fun, then we went and watched Ladder 49 at the local theatre - have to agree with Captoldtimer, good hollywood movie(hell of a lot better than backdraft).

We usually get together and BBQ, fish, bowl, or just meet at the pub and shoot the sh*t over a beer and some wings. Sometimes we'll all go to a ballgame and take the kids or go to dinner with the wives. Good times.

FTMP: I recognize that: it's "Seek and Destroy" from Jeff Foxworthy isn't it?

We play the Can You Top This (fire stories) game. Our pump operator usually wins:0 followed by the Chief.

Other than that, sometimes a few of us will show up at one of the Guy's campsite at the Lake (surprise!!) bearing liquor and food. Most of the wives get along so it works pretty good.

A bunch of us usually put together a ski/snowmobile trip every winter. There is a group of guys who make a Notre Dame football trip every other year, rent a motor home. My group goes out to dinner about once every month or 2, usually after our last day. Last time around, we made a road trip down to Arthur Ave. in the Bronx, good Italian restaurants there. We are only like an hour away. We have a softball team. We usually also go out and hoist a few after the monthly meeting of the local.

Well it depends if the conversation starts out with " What are you doing this weekend." If that is the start of the conversation it usually means some kind of manual labor home repair project, but hey what are brohters good for. But for fun we ride atv's or dirtbikes. A couple of us have 4x4 trucks to play in the mud and thrash around off-road, those that don't have trucks ride along and get to play with the chains. Fix 4x4's from said thrashing, usually caused from to much right foot and too many spirits. We also take time to go to the range to shot a weapon of choice whether it is a pistol, shotgun, or rifle. Or if nothing else go to one of our houses and play cards, eat and drink. Whats nice is that the wives or girlfriends participate in all that we do and make sure everybody makes it home safe. You gotta love the women for all they do for us, even if it the little things.
