Default Tour Bus Hits Fire Engine East of L.A.

A tour bus carrying passengers to a casino struck an Upland Fire Department engine that was responding to a T/C on the I-10 freeway in Ontario (approx. 50 miles east of L.A.) this morning. Details are still sketchy, but it appears that the engine was in the center median lane at the time of the collision and came to rest on the right shoulder.

The Upland FD engineer suffered major head injuries and was air lifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in critical condition. The officer and firefighter suffered lesser injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

One passenger on the bus was killed and the other 54 passengers and the driver were transported to local hospitals.

The engineer, who's name hasn't been released to the public yet (so I won't post it here), is a former member of my department. Please keep him in your prayers. I'll provide updates as I hear.

My thoughts are with him and his family.........

I just don't understand how it happened. If they are in the center median and got sent across all lanes of traffic, what was the bus doing?? From the pics I saw, it looked like the majority of the damage to the bus was on the front right corner........

Default Was I looking at the same wreck?

The pictures that I saw appeared to have heavy damage on the left side (Driver's side). I'll go back and see.. but I'd really like to know what the bus was doing here. It does seem strange...

I'd say that it appears as though the bus might have been in the far left lane, fire truck in the center, and when the bus heard the siren.. merged over to the right, right into the fire truck. Just looking at where the damage is, it'd appear as though the bus was to the left of the fire truck... just my opinion..

Just watched the news update. That section of freeway has a "carpool" lane against the center divider, not a regular median. The T/C that the engine was responding to was on the opposite side of the freeway, so the engine was merging into the carpool lane and was going to stop opposite the T/C scene. It appears that the bus was travelling in the carpool lane when this occurred. My guess would be that the bus was coming up fast behind the engine and either didn't see him changing lanes or was unable to brake in time.
