    Default police chase

I was watching one of those worlds wildest police video shows the other day and I had to wonder how police departments don’t get sued all the time. On most of the chases that ended in a wreck the cops run up and yank the person out of the car. After they yank him/her out of the vehicle, they wrestle around with them putting handcuffs on. This practice can’t be good for the c-spine (even without an injury dare I say). A few possibilities that I see are: no one has suffered an injury, no one has bothered to sue, or we just don’t hear about it. Which do you think it is? It just seems like you would hear more about it than you do currently.

Just curious to see what everyone’s thoughts are on the subject….

Just curious what you think an alternative would be... call for an ambulance and allow the crew to go up to the vehicle?

While people don't always run for a good reason, many times it's because they're less-than-ideal citizens/aliens.

Their safety comes last. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but I view it as a consequence to putting lives at risk needlessly by running from the law.

At that point, he is a violent felon. The safety of the officers, the general public and the EMS workers who are going to eventually arrive is paramount. He forfeited his right to be treated with kindness and respect. Screw him.

Good point...I didnt think of it that way....

Thinking of it that way, I guess that there would not be much of a case in court...it would be similar to someone sueing an ems crew for staging in the area of a crime scene....

So, you would have treated this jerk otherwise. You would just walk up to the car and ask the dude or female to step out of the vehicle, as I would like to converse with you, after you have chase this sucker several miles and they endangered you life as well as every one else on the road. Maybe you could have some soda pop and cookies to munch on as you all chat on the guard rail.

These people, for whatever reason try their damnest to get away from all police officers and will use whatever means they can to do just that. I have no feelings for the person that the police jerk out of the car and slam them to the ground and put the cuffs on them. At anytime, the police officer life is at stake, not knowing if this fool may have a weapon that will end his or her life.

I give an ^5^ to police and wish them well and a safe tour. Use whatever means you have to apprehend these felons!

Doing this could be detrimental to the safety and well being of the suspect. NOT doing this could be detrimental to the safety and well being of the cops.... Which would you choose?

My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

I agree with George and will add that if they did that more often, perhaps some people would think twice before breaking the law!
