CLEARWATER - A 21-year-old Palm Harbor man helping free a boat from a sandbar near Seminole Boat Ramp Saturday was killed when he was hit by the boat's propeller, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

Jim B. Spicer was with friends on "beercan island," a popular gathering place for boaters. He went to the west side of the island about 5 p.m. to free the boat, said Sheriffs Office spokeswoman Marianne Pasha. Spicer was at the stern, in the water, when he was hit several times the 25-foot boat's propeller, she said. Details of the accident were not released.

An off-duty Lakeland firefighter and others took Spicer to Coachman Park in another boat, but he died before receiving medical assistance. The incident appears to have been an accident, but an investigation is continuing and charges could be filed, Pasha said.
