Post A compendium of promotion questions

I know there are plenty of threads about "how do I survive the promotional interview" but I'm interested in compiling a list of questions that you have been asked in a promotional interview or some that you have asked yourself, if you're in a position to do so. I think it might be a good resource for candidates to use in prepping.

    Any takers?

    Here it is.

One is written by the canidate and the other one is the interview questions.

    hope this helps.

    1. A firefighter that was on standby at the station approaches you after the call and states that another firefighter that responded with you told him he couldn’t go and told him to get off the truck. This firefighter has all the necessary training needed to respond to fires. How will you handle this situation?

    2. A female firefighter pulls you aside at a training night and tells you that she is being harassed by a male firefighter at the station. She states that he has followed her around the station during trainings and at one point grabbed her buttocks in front of others. She says she doesn’t want to get him in trouble but the teasing and following her makes her uncomfortable. How will you handle this situation?

    3. During a regular maintenance night, a firefighter lets you know that the pump on Engine 2 is leaking and they cannot figure out where. After some checking, you find that a small drainpipe has broke from being frozen while sitting outside. What would you do next?

    4. While stopping at the station for your paycheck, another firefighter comes in for the same. He states that while you two are alone and can talk, he would like to bring up some issues of another firefighter. He states that this other firefighter has been known to borrow items from the station and not bring them back such as tools, etc. Then at the last call he was on, he reached into another person’s vehicle, grabbed some money and put it in his own pocket. He stated something to the effect of “mind your own business” and “I’m going to pay him back.” How would you handle this situation?

    5. After returning to the station after a fire call, one firefighter wants to talk to you privately. This firefighter says that they believe the other officer on the call was particularly harsh on them and felt that this officer was out of line by yelling at them on scene. This firefighter is visibly upset. What is your solution to this problem?

    6. While at the station for training, we are toned out for a structure fire. While you are putting on your gear, you hear yelling coming from Engine 1. When you investigate, you see a physical struggle between two firefighters who both say they are going on the first out truck. No other officer sees this but you. How will you handle this situation?

    7. Returning from an EMS call, one first responder states that he was stuck with a needle in the bed of the patient but did not say anything right away because he did not want to look stupid in front of his peers. He is now telling you after the call. He believes the needle was from the ambulance after starting an IV but cannot be certain. What are you going to do to handle the situation? What is required?

    8. You are in charge of a small group firefighters finishing up some hose testing at the station. During your last test, a hose breaks and a part of the hose hits a firefighter in the chest. He states he is fine and continues working. While picking up, you notice a large redness in his face and a small bruise developing on his cheek. Is there any action required for this? Explain why or why not?

    9. While on scene, a firefighter from your crew is found at the rehab area. You have not assigned anyone to the rehab area as of yet. Explain what actions as an officer you should do if anything.

    10. A group of firefighters are horsing around after a call. They are teasing back and forth in a friendly manner. It escalates to some wrestling. As an officer, do you think you should intervene? At what point do you take action if any?

    11. You are dispatched to a sounding fire alarm at the high school. You are responding in Engine 1 with a full crew. Just as you leave the station, you receive another fire call of smoke coming from the residence just 3 blocks from the fire station. As an officer, what is your decision on how to handle both calls? Would you change your response in anyway? What is the SOG for this type of situation?

    12. You are returning from a 10-50PI in Engine 3. Over the radio Cascade 1 calls you back to the scene. Once you arrive with Cascade 1 you see that while turning around they backed into a parked car. What do you do next?

    13. You are at the fire station and someone comes to the door looking for a burning permit. What is your response to this person wanting a burning permit?

Here's a couple we recently used. I don't wnat to post them all, in case we want to use them again (good questions, Dickey!):

How do you handle this situation:
A new SOG is being put into effect regarding clothing bearing the department patch, emblem, or name. Effective immediately, no personnel may wear any piece of clothing with the department emblem, patch, or name into a bar or drinking establishment, regards of whether or not the person is drinking alcohol. You know this will be unpopular with the members. How will you promote this decision in a positive light and compel voluntary compliance?

As an officer, you will have a great deal of influence over the direction and goals of the department. List several short (1 year), medium (5 year), and long-term (>5 year) goals you have in mind.

What have you done to prepare yourself for this position? Why are you interested in this position?
