WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMOKY...
Deputy Chief McNulty Strikes 4 Again!

Thursday, March 17, 2005, dawned a grand and glorious day in Jersey City, NJ. The luck of the Irish brought sunny, bright blue skies and temperatures finally reaching above freezing; a welcome relief from the snow, ice and bitter cold that had plagued the area just one week earlier. Would some moderating temperatures bring some relief from the winter's hectic fire activity?

The legendary luck of the Irish would come up a wee bit short in that department, however. Jersey City fire fighters battled a 2nd Alarm at 12-14 Delaware Ave. and a working fire at 21 Fulton Ave. on the 16th. Group C's tour of duty began with some routine runs, but the early afternoon brought an unusual assignment at the Global Terminal at Port Jersey Blvd. This containerport, which straddles the Jersey City - Bayonne border, had a ship tied up at a berth in Bayonne leaking a chemical in its hold. Bayonne had several companies at work, including their Haz-Mat Unit, and requested assistance from Jersey City. Batt. 2, Eng. Co. 22-19 and Tower Ladder 4 responded and were operating at the Global Terminal when Box 749 was transmitted at 1339 hours for smoke in the area of Grant Ave. & King Drive.

This street, formerly known as Jackson Ave., was the main shopping district in the Greenville section of the city until the area was besieged by urban decay typical of so many cities in the 60's and 70's. Some recent development along the avenue had brought some signs of life for commercial activity, but much more needs to be done.

Res. Co. 1, commanded by Capt. Dennis Harris, arrived first, reporting smoke showing from a three story building under renovation at #332 King Dr., one block north of the reported location. Capt. Harris reported a working fire at 1341, but the source of the smoke proved elusive. Lines were stretched into the upper floors of the building, but it soon became apparent that the fire was in an adjacent brick commercial structure at #328-30. This was a two story brick structure, once known as the "Kresge Building" housed two stores, a 99 cent discount store and the "Antique Attic". The rear one story portion of the building extended some 100 feet deep and was essentially a windowless storage building.

Fire was apparently burning between the first and second floors. Ventilation was a daunting task, as the 2nd floor windows were covered by cement block. As companies worked to open up and locate the fire, conditions deteriorated, prompting Division 1, Deputy Chief Martin McNulty, to transmit a 2nd Alarm. Despite making some progress in breaching one blocked up window and opening the roof, smoke continued to bank down, inundating the entire neighborhood. With smoke now billowing into both exposures, the three story building to the north and the one and two story "Pioneer Supermarket" to the south, Chief McNulty ordered a 3rd Alarm. A sizable crack developed in the front brick wall at the 2nd floor level of the original fire building. The evacuation of the building was ordered and units prepared for master stream operations. At 1425 hours, Chief McNulty radioed the Fire Dispatch Center to "Strike a 4th Alarm", Jersey City's first 4th Alarm since August 13, 2002. That previous 4th Alarm was struck by none other than Chief McNulty himself for a row of frame dwellings at 213-19 Clerk St.

Two ladder pipes, a tower ladder, two deluge sets, numerous handlines and even two Bresnan distributors attacked the fire for over 5 hours before any real progress was achieved. A good portion of the rear storage section of the fire building collapsed. Although no fire extended to the adjacent supermarket, that business suffered heavy smoke and water damage. Three engines and one ladder company were special called for a watch line at 2130 hours. Units are expected to remain on the scene extinguishing hidden pockets of fire well into the next day. Battalion 2 and Tower Ladder 4 eventually broke away from the mutual aid assignment at Global Terminal and responded to the fire. Eng. Co. 22-19, who would have been normally second and third due at the fire, remained at Global Terminal and never made "the Big One"!

Car 26 responded with Probationary Member Anthony Pecorelli as chauffeur for his first run. Over seven hours of operation, 240 cheeseburgers, 9 gallons of coffee, 120 bottles of water, 9 gallons of coffee and 6 gallons of hot chocolate - what a way to start!

LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 1747 Hours (5:47 PM PST), ten Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS Battalion Captain, three LAFD Chief Officer Command Teams and various LAFD support and investigative resources under the direction of Assistant Chief Anthony Varela, responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 15012 West Parthenia Street in Panorama City. The first Company arrived quickly to discover large volumes of pressurized smoke showing from one end-unit of a two-story condominium over parking structure located deep within a large complex of identical buildings. A teenage occupant, who was alerted to the fire by the smell of smoke, had safely evacuated with her one younger female and two younger male siblings prior to the Fire Departmentís arrival. Firefighters quickly extended handlines to mount a brisk and decisive interior assault on the flames, which had taken hold of both floors and the attic of the difficult to access building. Well-coordinated and aggressive firefighting efforts, aided by precise vertical ventilation, confined the fire to the condominium of origin, sparing the adjacent occupancy and nearby buildings. The flames were extinguished in just thirty-one minutes. There were no injuries. Displaced by the fire was a family of six who chose to seek accommodations with next of kin. Loss from the blaze is estimated at $380,0000 ($300,000 structure and $80,000 contents). The fireís origin was traced to the laundry area of the ground floor common garage. The exact cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

Philladelphia Fire Department book for sale

A New Fire Book has just come out and what a book it is. It is not like any other book you have every seen.. It is called " Tin Helmets Iron Men " by veteran Fire Photographer Bob Bartosz. For you old timers, Bob Bartosz was one of the first to come out with a Modern Day hard cover Fire Book back in 1971. It was called " Black & White and Red All Over " and within six months it was sold out and to this day it is in great demand and a great Collector's item. In fact if you can find one be prepared to pay in the mid three figure range to get a copy. Bob's new book "Tin Helmets Iron Men" looks like it will be a fast sell out also. It is printed in a very Limited Edition. It is a hard cover book with 216 pages of some of the greatest fire photos and stories you have every seen. It is based on the Philadelphia Fire Department during the 1950's thru the 1970's in which their members wore the Cairns Aluminum Helmets. All the photos are in black and white and are not the typical fire photos. As you will see when you get your copy. The Introduction of the book is written by former Fire Commissioner and Chief of the Department William C. Richmond. Some of Commissioner Richmond's quotes "In Tin Helmets Iron Men, Bob Bartosz has graphically captured an era in the Philadelphia Fire Department's History that was both exciting and challenging for fire fighters. It promises to be the same for the readers who follow this story. His outstanding photographs taken with a genuine feel for what the fire fighters life is really like. A marvelous portrayal of the dramatic and often tragic experiences of those men who wore the Tin Helmets. He preserves, for all times, a graphic record of a truly memorable age in firefighting as it was experienced in Philadelphia. It is a photographic time capsule that gives us a fascinating look at the past as shown through the talented lens of a working photographer who captured more than just a picture. He takes the reader right out onto the street and along side those heroic individuals who made up his subject."Bob Bartosz has been taking fire photos for over fifty years and still can be seen on the fire grounds. Also included in "Tin Helmets Iron Men" are various apparatus photos of some of Philadelphia's greatest pieces of equipment, such as their 125 foot Snorkel, the Fire Bird. Plus the famous Giant Deluge, SS 99 at work. And Marine Units at work. Along with a photo of Engine Co. 6's Ford/Hahn 1954 750 GPM pumper at work. This pumper is now owned by a SPAAMFAA member from Philadelphia and can be seen at various events and parades. "Tin Helmets Iron Men" also has some very interesting stories, especially the one about the Captain from Engine Co. 24. A mystery that was solved after 29 years. Also a great human interest story about Little Milty of the Second Alarmers. This story will get you. The book is in very Limited Edition and will surely be gone fast. I would suggest you order your copy now or you may miss out on it. And when they are gone--they are gone.
