    From smokeybear.com
In 1952 Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins wrote the anthem that would cause a debate among Smokey enthusiasts for the next several decades. In order to maintain the correct rhythm, the writers added a "the" between "Smokey" and "Bear." As testament to the song's popularity, Smokey Bear became known as "Smokey The Bear" to many adoring fans, but in actuality his name never changed, and he is still known correctly as Smokey Bear.

It has been called "Smokey the Bear" for as long as I can remember. Even when I was in elementary school......... My dad used to work for the Virginia Division of Forestry. At parades he dressed as Smokey and was introduced by the MC as "Smokey the Bear."

Any Smokey buff will be quick to point out that his correct name is:

    "Smokey Bear"

I think most people use Smokey The Bear though. Doesn't really matter to me, though I know some of the buffs and historians take it VERY seriously!

Hey there Boo Boo Buddy.. I've always known him as Smokey THE Bear. Of course, I'm not one to argue with buffs/historians.. they're ALWAYS right (in their terms!). But they can't argue with Yogi.. "Hey there Boo Boo Buddy..."

    Cool Steve's Right.............

SPiper has the correct info. (Of course, you WOULD expect us Forestry folks to stick together) Smokey is a big part of our Prevention Programs, and it is always "Smokey Bear" on everything that I've seen.

    "Smokey Bear"

I tend to correct people who put "the" in there...I got set straight by a guy from the Division of Forestry a few years ago. I introduced myself to him as the person who would be playing "Smokey the Bear." That is a mistake that I will NEVER make again!

It is strange though, most do have a "the." Like the Army Corp. of Engineers' character...Freddie THE Fish.

    Straight from the USFS website

USFS - Smokey Bear and Fire Prevention

    "Remember -- Only You...."
    ...Can Prevent Wild Fires!"

Smokey Bear has warned people about the ravages of wild fire for so long that few people remember how this famous bear first captured our nation's attention.

Dressed in a Ranger’s hat and blue jeans, often sporting a shovel, his famous slogan is one of the most recognized advertising phrases in the world, and is protected by federal law.

Smokey Bear is correct. On May 23, 1952, the Smokey Bear Act (Public Law 359) was passed to protect Smokey from exploitation. This law gives the Secretary of Agriculture, in conjunction with the National Association of State Foresters and the Advertising Council, Inc., the authority to grant permission for the use of Smokey's image.

So do you think Yogi and Smokey get along well? I figure with the same last name they must be cousins at least. Do you think that Smokey is a stoge for Mr. Ranger on issues other then forest fires? Do you think Smokey has ever ratted out Yogi for stealing Pick-a-nick baskets?

You're right, winnie pooh just wouldn't sound good. HOWEVER - what about "SANTA-THE-CLAUS" or "EASTER-THE-BUNNY".

Most have incorrectly called him Smokey "THE" Bear for a long long time. The proper name actually is SMOKEY BEAR.

Well, I can't think of what a "Clause" is other then in a contract, so I don't know why you would have a the in St. Nick's name. And "the" exists with the Rabbit, but it is at the begining of his name, "the" Easter Bunny, it is a reference to what he is, his first name is not Easter.
