*** REPORT FROM THE LINE OF FIRE ***

SHERIDAN, OREGON:
SECOND ALARM COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FIRE

On Saturday, March 19, 2005 at 1532 Hours (3:32 PM PST), the Sheridan and West Valley Fire Districts were dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire at Taylor Lumber on Chipyard Road in the City of Sheridan. Based on dispatch information and the large column of heavy black smoke that was visible, Sheridan Fire District Engine 92 called for a second alarm while still enroute to the scene. First arriving units were confronted with heavy fire conditions coming from the West side of a 200 foot long log processing structure. Firefighters aggressively attacked the flames with handlines and a portable monitor, and were able to quickly confine the fire to the West half of the building. Due to the size of the structure and danger of collapse, an 85 foot ladder truck was requested from the Dallas Fire Department to assist with the final extinguishment of the fire.

At the height of the blaze, Firefighters were pouring over 1000 gallons of water per minute on the flames from hoses and the ladder truck. Engines from McMinnville and West Valley laid over 1500 feet of large diameter hose from the newly installed hydrants on Rock Creek Road to help supply water to the scene. In addition, tender trucks shuttled water from a hydrant in Sheridan to assist with the suppression efforts.

Due to the skillful and coordinated efforts of the personnel involved, damage was confined to half of the structure and no other buildings were affected. No Fire Service or civilian injuries were reported. Sheridan personnel remained on scene until 2134 Hours (9:34 PM PST) that night working with the property owner to overhaul the debris and mop-up hot spots. At the time of this release, the exact cause of the fire and dollar loss amount had not been determined.

Units responding:

1st Alarm: Sheridan Engines 92, 97, 98; Rescues 9, 98; Water Tender 9; Medic 91 , West Valley Engine 83

2nd Alarm: West Valley Engine 81; Water Tender 8
Amity Engine 52
McMinnville Engine 14

Special call: Dallas Ladder 101; Command 100
Amity Water Tender 57
West Valley Medic 8

Other agencies involved: Yamhill County Sheriff
City of Sheridan

500 Firefighters Gather in Glen Innes

About 500 NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) members converged on Glen Innes to test their emergency skills during the RFS Northern 5 Exercise from Friday 18 March to Sunday 20 March.

About 350 volunteer firefighters from 60 crews formed task forces to fight structure and vehicle fires, treat car accident victims, and participate in water transport operations in simulated incidents located around Glen Innes.

Nearly 150 communication and catering officers, incident managers, marshals and field commanders supported the firefighters.

Crews from around northern NSW stayed at a basecamp at the showground. NSW Fire Brigades, State Emergency Service, Volunteer Rescue Association and Police colleagues joined them.

''The exercise was a training opportunity for RFS Region North brigades. It also simulated the command and control systems used to coordinate large numbers of brigades responding to large-scale campaign fires,'' RFS Region North Manager, Chief Superintendent Ian Thomas said.

Apart from operational skills such as relaying water, off road driving and attending hazardous material incidents, volunteers also took part in theoretical instruction on global positioning systems and fire investigation.

''The personnel, fire tankers and support crews combined to produce an event which enabled volunteers to demonstrate the skills they have mastered and to learn more of those so necessary to volunteer firefighters today.

''I would like to praise the volunteers who are attending for their dedication and enthusiasm. Some travelled many hours to take part and gave up an entire weekend, all in an effort to improve the emergency services they provide to their communities,'' Chief Superintendant Thomas said.

Lessons learnt will provide the volunteers with valuable experience in attending real emergencies and ensuring public safety.

APSN was founded by true emergency professionals that are more than just scanner listeners. We specialize in notifying you about major fire and police events as they happen around the entire State of Arizona. Our professional staff knows what news is, and we do not send minor, non newsworthy events. All television, talk radio & newspapers in Phoenix currently use APSN. When you receive an alert from APSN, you will want to know what is happening! Why wait for the evening news when you can have the news, as it happens, delivered directly to your pager or email address! How do we notify you? That is your option. Although alpha numeric pagers have proven to be the fastest form of notification, we can notify any email address that you may have. That means we can send alerts to your PDA, 2-Way pager, cell phone, or personal email.

For paging groups around the country, we use the FNNM national system for multiple alarm or newsworthy incidents. We prefer to receive incidents via SNPP but can receive via dial up modem.
