MARCH 27, 2005 -- The use of fake badges to get through security at the city's federal buildings is reportedly on the rise.
According to the Daily News, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has seen a spike in the number of counterfeit shields being used to get into high-profile buildings in the past two months.
Officials say scam artists have pretended to be police officers, city inspectors, firefighters and even priests as they try to sneak past guards, the paper says. The FBI believes many of them planned to harass federal employees. In the past 18 months, the News says, nearly 20 suspects have been arrested for using phony badges and 77 more have been sent before a grand jury.
