Default We have all heard of the cat stuck in a tree but this is a first

    Nine fireman free frog

    FULL NEWS INDEX

A FROG trapped in a watering can needed firemen to free it.

The amphibian hopped into the sprinkler and was wedged in the spout.

A gardener made the discovery when he tried to water his plants.
He took the can to a nearby fire station in Ringwood, Hants, where a crew discussed what to do.

They freed the frog — which they dubbed Fergus — after half an hour by slicing off the spout with a hacksaw.

A fire spokesman said: “Nine firefighters were there and all had a hand in the rescue. We’re glad Fergus didn’t croak it!”

We have all heard of a cat stuck up a tree. but i would love to know what these british firefighters thought of this one.

Rendering humanitarian services is all part of the job for us. Might not have happened at my station though, one of my crew is terrified of frogs!!

It's not often someone brings a frog into the station in need of rescue.

I used to run with a fire company that got called out one afternoon to rescue an iguana in a tree. Needless to say, the iguana is still on the loose, but the story makes for a good conversation piece.

Has anyone here actaully taken part in a cat-in-the-tree call? I've been on one and I never want to do it again. Contrary to the cartoons and public belief, the cat is not happy to see us. It is scared. It is really ****ed off about being stuck. It doesn't know you. It wants to kill you. Had it not been for several blankets and full turnout gear, one of our Lt's would have looked like he went through a paper shredder.

More than one, nmfire...and since I spent 5 years or so working in a veterinary clinic, I'm always the animal handler. This past Thanksgiving Day...animal rescue, cat stuck in chimney! It was very comical to hear dispatch say "extrication complete" over the radio when we reported that the cat was free.

Good job to the guys who freed the frog! It may have been one of Captain Gonzo's cousins, or something like that...ya know, one of Kermit's kin...

nm, I've been to a 'cat in the wall' call. It got in the attic and fell down between two wall studs, ending up on the ground floor of a two story.

Got it out by taping a pool net to a pike pole and going fishing. He was extremely ****ed off when extricated.

I used to run with a ladder company and, in addition to the iguana incident (see above), I can think of at least two cats we pulled from trees in the years I was there...one of them from about 80 feet up. He was a determined little bugger, that's for sure.

We had a puppy down the wall incident once as well (fell down from the attic). That broke my heart because I love dogs (and they don't get all hissy like cats). We ended up cutting the drywall at the bottom to make a hole for the dog. Homeowner wanted the dog more than the wall so they didn't mind. The kids were loving it too.

We had a cat in a tree call not long ago the cat was about 30 feet up. Initial reports from the pd, stated the cat to be 10 feet up so we grabbed a 14' roof ladder threw it on the rescue and responded needless to say we didn't have enough ladder. I was footing the ladder and the Lt. was trying to call the cat by saying here kitty kitty then joking i told him to try meowing at it and he did everyone on scene got a good laugh out of that and his new nickname was meow for awhile. We went back brought an extension ladder and the cat was safely removed..

At my previous volunteer department, on a Sunday morning, as the Chief was just about to have a surprise hands on drill toned out, he received a phone call from a local resident asking for assistance in getting a cat out of a tree. He explained to the resident that we were about to have a drill and we would be available to assist him/her in a little while. Sure enough we are at the drill and get a 911 rescue call for a person having fallen from a ladder. The resident could not wait and tried to get the cat down themselves, and fell.

Our vol. department had a page at 1900 hr on a sat in june 02 to a campground 1/2 mile from our station to rescue a squirell from a tree. The dispacher apoligized for paging us but said that the woman was desperate. We responded to the campground to find a woman that had a pet squirell that she was walking on a leash. A dog barked at the squirell, which pulled the leash from her hand and climbed to the top of a 60 ft pine tree and managed to tie the leash to the tree. We did not have a ladder tall enough to reach the squirell and the top of the tree was too small to climb. The only ladder trucks in this area are 15 to 30 miles away with 1 per town which makes one unavailable for an animinal rescue. We located a tree service company for her which brought a bucket truck and rescued her pet for only $300 on a saturday night. We received a thank you note and a donation for our assistance. In our 25 years as a department we have not been called to rescue a cat.

I have been involved in 2 "cat removals" from a tree, both using the aerial. However, my most unuusual animal rescue came just the other day when a resident called and said that her cat had become wedged under the seat of her car. Myself and another firefighter headed over there, and sure enough, this big ole FAT cat had become wedged under the front seat of the car. It took us about 30 minutes of working her out, but finally the tabby was released into her owner's arms. Sorta makes ya feel good....

We do a lot of this type of thing as our fire district, which is in an unincorporated area (the whole parish outside the cities thing here in Louisiana is very weird...) could be annexed by the City of Bossier if the residents wanted them to. So in our case it pays to do the little things, as the customers really do have a choice.

Never have I been on a cat in tree call. I've seen a lot of other weird stuff but nothing like that. The only call I can think of that involved an animal was a car wreck, Toyota vs Horse.
