    Default Lights and Sirens

Im from Low Moor,IA and we are only allowed to have blue lights but we can get wig wags for our personal vehicle, but i dont see why we cant have sirens to just to help get people out of the way alittle more easier. They dont even pull over for us sometimes with lights and sirens on going to a call in our trucks.

    Angry LOCK IT DOWN !!!!!

Blue Lights, Red Lights, Wig-Wags, Dash Strobes, State Laws, "We should be allowed to have 750,000 giga-watt rotating lights on our pintos..." and .."Our Sirens should be louder than a Federal Q2B so that I can move traffic during my 1/2 block ride to the station" Bull Sh** needs to end.

Web-Team you guys can't tell me you don't see a disaster starting here....Please , Please Lock it Down.

To answer the question orginally posted....against my better judgement.....No volunteer firefighter should be using a siren in his / her personal vehicle....ever, ever...Could you imagine 35 people with lights and sirens converging on the fire house like raped apes going to a bannana convention....I can't even begin to imigane the accidents that would generate.

Blue, Red, Green, Clear, Purple, Striped, Checkered, or whatever light a state allows Volunteers to use is A COURTESEY LIGHT ONLY and it should be left at that....Oh Lord I gotta' stop

You shoulda quit while you were ahead. In many states...that is untrue.

But this topic has been debated AdNausea...and I will not comment any further.

Fireman147.....search the forums before you post. This topic is quite contentious...and has been beaten to death 1000 times over.

of course not. that's got to be the stupidest things I've ever heard. If you have a bike, you need to get this:

You cannot close the thread until the 40 ft scaffold pole with fully dressed Christmas Tree on top is attached to the bike.

This warns low flying helicopter's, with dayglo orange monsoon bucket(optional extra-see catalog) that you are the most vital person on this planet-and no fire/M.V.A or cat up tree can possibly be controlled unless you and you alone are in attendance!

You may also care to purchase the Tartan, 100% waterproof, dive suit-this is festooned with 2,000 winking fairy lights , for riding your bike, should the weather be inclement--saves at least 3 minutes changing at Firehouse or Fireground, of course if you have a young friend who is also a Arsonist --you could be waiting at the fire when the appliances arrive!

The power pack battery for all the electrics for this superb range of must have equipment is towed on a dinky trailer (only weighs 500lb inc)--again see catalog

Ok, I'm laughing my arse off now!

A couple of us were talking about fixing up a bike for one of our members (our only bumper monkey) the other night, but we were going to put a basket on the front with a cat in it and tie a string to the cats "privates" for a siren............almost fell off my stool when I read this post.

***Edit to add def. of "Bumper Monkey".....One who always has an SCBA malfunction when at a working fire, didn't want to offend anyone............

You have to remember that in Iowa, whole departments will quit over not having alcohol in the fire stations.
You take away their whacker gear and they have no reason to live.
I heard that, with the exception of Interstate 80, the rest of their roads are dirt or gravel.
It makes sense that lights and sirens are prized possessions, elevating the possessor to rock star status.

    Yes...sad for sure...but you're generalizing.

You take away their whacker gear and they have no reason to live.
    Maybe so!

I heard that, with the exception of Interstate 80, the rest of their roads are dirt or gravel.
This just proves your idiocy...I'm not even going to touch this.

To respond to the original question...while yes it has been beaten to death. Look up the Iowa Motor Vehicle Code. You may have a blue light for responding to fires, a white light if you are EMS. I've never heard of anything on wig wags and I don't know why you would need/want them.

Regardless of what color, they are COURTESY lights. You do not have the right to exceed any posted traffic laws...hence the siren is useless. Secondly, it is ludacris to think you would need one. I have been to Low Moor, and I looked up your city's data. You have a population of 249, and land area of less than 1/2 a square mile. I live in a town almost 4 times that size and I don't need one! Why do you?

They dont even pull over for us sometimes with lights and sirens on going to a call in our trucks.
This happens everywhere...and only proves that no matter how many lights and/or sirens you have on your POV, it ain't gonna get ya there any quicker!

You are correct there. I think the reason he used to type in ALL CAPS is because he apparently can't figure out when to use them so he just types everything the same.........

and why does this make no sense? it's good for one, but not for the other? when a FF gets behind his POV, lights and sirens are very bad, but when he gets behind his BRT, oh, we absolutely need them. and I don't mean having warning lights so we don't get hit by other cars at an MVC, but using them when responding to emergency calls.

I think it is a valid question, one that we as firefighters sometimes ignore. or rather, one we sometimes don't want to address. while fireguy919's attitude might be slightly harsher than mine, I've made the exact same arguement before. and I still havn't heard a good response to it. don't think I will anytime in my lifetime.
