    Default Hood- Over or Under?

I don't intend to start another thread on whether or not you should wear a hood. My question is for those that do, do you put your mask on and then pull the hood over or do you pull the hood up and put the mask over? I was always taught to put my mask on and pull the hood over it. I have seen a few videos lately and most have the mask over the hood. I find that I always put it around my neck but occasionally forget to pull it over my mask after donning. Pulling the hood up first and then putting the mask on would eliminate that. My question is if this affects the seal of the mask? I realize that I can just do it for myself but wanted to hear from others.

The only "official" technique that I have seen during any type of training is the hood over the straps of the mask. I would think that with most masks it would be impossible to get a good seal if the hood was under the straps .. but I could be wrong.

    Default seal

I was always trained that you place the hood over the maskbecause it would not get a proper seal if it was under the hood. Makes sense to me, I know some guys claim that they need beards for the SCBA mask. But majority of us get a better seal if we are skin to mask.
    Thanks

I have seen videos of european firefighters (might have been British) with mask over hood. I don't know what technical differences there are between American hoods and BAs compared to their models, so it might work.

It would be interesting to do a quantitative fit test both ways to see what difference it would make.

    HOWEVER

I've always been taught hood over mask and I don't plan to change that anytime soon.

I believe that my state's OSHA regulations say that nothing is to be between skin and the mask seal. I am not 100% sure but I believe it's true. That is why we are not allow to have a beard.

Lightbulb Hood over is the way

Hood over the mask is the way to go. Due to potential for severe leakage using the mask over hood method, your air supply could be depleated at a faster rate.

First mask, then hood. Whew! Something we can all agree on.

I see alot videos/pics of the guys in New York (FDNY)at fires with hoods on and no mask (prior to entering the fire). It would appear that they put the mask on top of the hood. Is this true?

Most have the mask over the hood? I'd like to know what training videos are showing something else, because they'd be wrong, wrong, wrong. Hood over the mask, definintely.

My dream and I hope you don't find this too crazy is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

probably not, but are you saying that putting your mask over the hood is a good idea?

The hood has to go over the mask- anything other than that WILL affect the seal.

It must be remebered that we need both a positive pressure and a negative pressure test done when donning BA. A hood under the seal will affect these....
