Brush fire burns five acres in Punta Gorda

PUNTA GORDA- A brush fire that started around 2 p.m. Wednesday burned 5 acres in Peace River Shores and came dangerously close to a house.

When Charlotte County Fire & EMS arrived at the scene in the Punta Gorda subdivision off U.S. 17, nearly two and a half acres were already engulfed due to winds and heavy brush in the area, according to Dee Hawkins, Fire & EMS spokeswoman.

The blaze came within 50 feet of a home on Lillus Street, but no homes were damaged, officials said.

According to Hawkins, it is believed children started the fire on an abandoned couch in a ditch near a tire swing.

Fire & EMS brought two engines and two brush trucks to the fire. The Punta Gorda Fire Department also brought an engine, and the Division of Forestry brought two tractors and a brush truck. The blaze was extinguished around 4 p.m.

An investigation continues.
