ONONDAGA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A 32-year-old former firefighter has been charged with setting a fire in the community where he worked. He is suspected of setting dozens of other fires.

John L. Gray, 32, of Mason faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of four counts of arson. He worked for Onondaga Township Fire Department near Lansing in 1990-1999.

Gray was under surveillance Tuesday when he set a grass fire, Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth told the Lansing State Journal on Thursday.

The fire endangered a trailer and livestock structures, police said. Detectives also are investigating whether Gray was involved in 200 to 300 suspicious fires, including more than 90 grass fires and 15 abandoned structure fires, in that community, Leslie and Rives Junction.

''We believe that Mr. Gray is one of the most prolific arsonists ever to strike this region,'' Wriggelsworth said. Gray was arraigned Wednesday and was being held in the county jail on $1 million bond.

A jail guard said Friday that Gray could not receive telephone calls.

A preliminary hearing to decide if there is enough evidence for trial is set for Thursday in Mason District Court.

Wow. I am surprise one hand, but not really on the other. I used to live in the this town of Onondaga. There were several things during this time frame that were suspected. He showed all the signs of a Firefighter who set fires. Just make sick that someone is either that bored or needs a rush that bad. There were several older barns and other building that they suspected as being torch by arsonist including one that was practically across the street from the Fire Department. Could say whole hell lot more, but I won't at this time.

I am not really sure. Talk to my Dad last night and he heard it was someplace down in TN or KY. I think this is probably one of the question that could be forward to Ingham County Sherrif Department or the PAO to see if they know sure. I was wondering why they didn't mention where. Unless he drifted for the time from place to place and if he did.

Well let's just say to some of in the community it was obvious what was happening when all of the Grass Fires were set. The main problem was proving anything. I think the Fire Chief at the time before he died unexpectedly was about to push the Sherrif Department to investigate him. Then again this was the scuttlebutt.

There are more incidents that now that he has been caught will be brought to light I am sure. I just posted the article mainly to share the news and to let you guys know there may have been potential torch on the roam for a couple years. I just wish they would of been more specific on where he went too. So if anyone in KY or TN that had a rash fires for a couple years that stopped. Well maybe check to see if this individual was in your area.
